Have been digging thru some Koener Ray and Glover tunes... Seems that Spider John Koerner added a G octave string to his National, as well as the acoustic seen in the video (center tuning peg added). I dont think I could detect hearing the 7 th string without being told....but thinking about it, it (as well as the 9 string Big Joe guitars) add a nice fullness without the over jangle of a 12...

Charlie Parr does the same thing on some of his NRP Triolians. You can see the banjo tuner in the center of his headstock in some of his You Tube vids. Funny, I know he cites Spider John Koener as a major influence but I didn't know he also did the 7 string thing. Charlie is excellent if you've not checked him out....

Someone needs to make a `dual-concentric` machine head, so you can turn a guitar into a 7,8....12 string guitar without modification (just a new m/head/s). PT Might stick out a bit , I`m thinking of a banjo style head coming out of the worm gear......who`s going to make one

May be possible on the light gauge string side. Don't think it would fly on Shark Tank, though...
I plan to go with the rickenbacker 12 string 90 degree approach when I build a Big Joe 9 string.

Ian Anderson (editor of fRoots magazine and great blues and slide guitarist) has a 'Spider John Koerner 7 string MM resonator guitar' that we customised specially for him a few years ago. It's a cool guitar!

I like charlie parr - didn't know about the 7th string I can't really hear it - seems slightly superfluous whilst using the mag pick-up? TT

That video is the first I heard of Charlie Parr. His voice reminiscent of very early Dylan. Is it the capstan on my ipad or is his slide timing/phrasing a bit idiosyncratic?... Some folks in the audience look a bit uncomfortable...

Sometimes I pick up a second string especially a b with a high e - it gives it some texture or brush feel instead of a clear picked sound, maybe its to add that way, only different as its an octave? Sounds interesting.

I don't know what the provenance of Charle Parr is...but that's a LOT of money to ask for a NRP. I have purchased several necks (usually seconds) from NRP for projects, and am always tweaked when I see how low they set the tuners...I don't understand why they do that...

Yeah, I'm with you there. The new ones have a lot of headstock out past the ends of the slots. Just doesn't look proper to me. I imagine it's a strength issue. I have seen numerous vintage Nationals that were broken in that spot.

Theres enough room on this old Eko to fit a banjo peg in without any extra holes Instant 7 string! This MM Lightning is a little thicker and a new clamping feral would have to be made ,or maybe a small stepped block, deep enough to clamp the m/head to, but thinner than the head so it misses the string. I`ve put this between the 3rd and 2nd m/head , you could do a 10 string on the Lightning like this or a 14 string on the Eko (ok there would be a lot of rubbing strings as you got to the nut but 7 or 8 would be no problem!)
