Attachment DeletedI currently own this guitar. My uncle bought several years ago from reputable auction house in west Chester ny. Two guitars were being auctioned off that we owned by Levon. Story goes that they were gifted to Levon's oral surgeon. This dobro was allegedly given to Levon by muddy waters.. hard to verify but I am confident that the auctioneer did due diligence in their listing and selling of the instrument.

What's this word "gifted" which has crept into the ENGLISH language? The word "gift" is a NOUN not a VERB! The word which should be used in this context should be declined from the verb TO GIVE - as in "Provenance: Muddy Waters GAVE it, as a gift, to Levon Helm who GAVE it to the present owner". Yes, I am a grumpy old git who's fed up with the distortion of his mother tongue........ Be safe, Y'all. PD

Hello Saltstainedeyes,
Welcome to our forum.
That is a wonderful guitar to own. It is an interesting story that sounds completely plausible, but without actual provenance of some kind, to collectors it means very little. There are no recordings or photographs of Muddy with the OMI Dobro that I know of. I am in touch with Muddy's sons on social network and I might send them a photo of the guitar to see if it jogs any memories.
Do you have anything more than just the hearsay to back up its history?

Mike, you are right the story is plausible but difficult to prove. I bought the guitar from my uncle who bought at auction. The same auction also sold one Levon's acoustics that was signed and featured an album cover that Levon did holding the acoustic. The person who brought this guitar to the auction house also brought the dobro with the same story. LEvon did cut a record with muddy in the early 70's entitled "Woodstock". This was the first record that Levon cut in his new woodcock studio. Seems plausible to me that muddy would give Levon a gift (probably not one of his cherished or recording guitars but something that represents the blues) as a gift. I believe the record won a Grammy. Levon later fell on extremely hard financial times as well as serious health issues. Seems very plausible that he may have bartered gear for dental work? The oral surgeon was located not far from Levon's home.
While this is all plausible all I have is the auction material and serial number of the guitar.. the auction house is reputable and I doubt they would list it without the belief that the story was legit. I bought the guitar for a price lower than a non-Levon owned USA made dobro but that said I believe the story to be very very possible, that said I know it holds no collector value other than being a USA made dobro.. can u tell me some more info on this dobro... not sure what the body is made of?. Biscuit bridge? Thanks -Jack
