Sadly it does appear to be true. Jack's website now has a notification, and BBC News are running the story.

That is very sad news. Jack Bruce was a great musician and an important figure in the history of rock music.
As well as being in Cream and numerous other bands, he also made of my favourite albums of the early 70s, 'Why Dontcha' as a member of West, Bruce and Laing.
R.I.P. Jack Bruce

Not to forget that wonderful voice (that Eric couldn't come to terms with) A severe loss amongst many recent demises. Rest in peace JB.

Enormous loss. His singing, playing and writing, perhaps driven by working with Clapton and Baker, was groundbreaking.

(Photograph of Jack Bruce at the BBC Old Grey Whistle Test - ©1975 by Alan Messer) Bruce’s life had been marked by health and financial troubles. In the late 1970s he struggled with drug addiction, and worked as a session musician to make money. In 2003 he was diagnosed with liver cancer, and that September he underwent a transplant. His body initially rejected the new liver and Bruce almost died, but he recovered well enough to return to performance in 2004. I think my brother's caption on this photo tells a lot... "It is very sad to see rock icon Jack Bruce leave this world so soon. The cause of death was apparently liver failure. Earlier before this interview I met two of the most fucked-up men who could hardly see, that's another picture. Meanwhile let's remember a brilliant musician, lovely man and a rock icon. Here is the interview with Jack and Mick Taylor talking to Bob Harris on the Old Grey Whistle Test, 1975"Shine On Michael

That is REALLY sad news about Jack Bruce.
In this day and age of endless hype in the music business, when every kid that can hold a note is rated as a potential superstar on the "X" Factor, Jack was the real deal.
I sadly never got to see Cream live back in the day, but did see JB play after the break up at a festival at Coventry University back around 1971. Cannot remember the name of his band at the time, but they played an afternoon set and the crowds were sparse, so I had to fortune to be just a few feet away and to watch the great man in action really close up.
I am no bass player, but Jack was jaw dropping and was trading licks with the lead guitarist. He seemed to make his Gibson talk - amazing.
I vaguely remember a review in NME or Sounds, when the journalist said Bruce's bass runs, were like a prehistoric animal grubbing around for food - pretty apt.
He was so good, I nearly went out and bought a four stringer, but luckily for all music lovers, I decided against it !
In my humble opinion, Clapton never played better than when he had Bruce and Baker pushing him on to greater heights - the man was a brilliant musician and we will not see his like again.
Thanks for the Music and the memories Jack, RIP....
Cheers,
Jack.

It's really only other musicians who can appreciate just what a talent he was. Cream was the tip of the iceberg.
