Advice on a broken tuning roller

Hi all

Im hoping someone here can help me out. I've dug out an old guitar that used to belong to my grandfather, I haven't looked at it for a long time, it's a classical guitar so does not fit with my normal blues stuff but decided to clean it all up, restring it and get a bigger guitar stand so I can keep it close by.

Sadly though when restringing I heard a crack and noticed one of the rollers has cracked, which then caught the string and cut it in half!! Image attached.

I know nothing about repairing or building but I know so many of you fantastic people are amazing at it. I was hoping someone might be able to give me some advice on how fixable this is and how much it might cost me? Obviously all luthier rates are different but a ballpark figure would be great. It doesn't seem too serious a problem to me.

I would replace the tuners. I have a box full of broken and funky tuners that I pirate parts from when I need them. If you find someone with a bunch of old classical tuner parts you might find a replacement roller. But those look like ecconomy tuners, so you can probably replace them for around $20. Check StewMac or Allparts. Look for a pair that match the style. They look like the Lyre style. That way the screw holes have a better chance of matching up. Good luck.

Thanks for your response. If I understand you correctly, I should be able to get new tuners that come with the rollers?

They are actually really nice tuners, very nicely engraved with pearloid pegs so I was hoping I might not have to replace.

You might be able to find the exact tuners if you do a google search for classical tuners.

Or Ebay. Someone may be selling the tuners for the exact guitar model or a guitar for parts but you need to make sure everything is there on the tuner like the screws, gears etc. My first choice would be identical model on an older model, so its the same material.

I think you need to know the circumference of the roller. I believe Stewmac has info on the relevant dimensions on their tuners to check against what you have on there.

I replaced a bunch of tuners on my Parlor guitars 30's - 60's and they weren't standardized though they looked similar.

This type of roller is held in by the screw through the gear wheel. There are several types , and 2 or 3 threads but most small guitar repair shops should have a box of old ones that might fit. A new cheap set will have to have the same space between rollers, so you need to check if getting new ones.

Thanks for your advice on this. There are plenty of cheap ones on eBay so I may experiment doing it myself then upgrade to nicer ones down the line when I have the cash.
