There are obviously lots of players whose names come up when we think of redefining the guitar from a predominantly accompaniment role to being a lead voice as well. One who is often overlooked, and who has just died, is George Shuffler. During the lean years of bluegrass when even the Stanley Brothers couldn't afford to tour with a full band, George's signature cross-picking style enabled a trio to sound full and for the guitar to take breaks without the overall sound suddenly losing it's body.
Even if bluegrass isn't your thing, George's style is still worth checking out I reckon....as well as his great earnest singing.
