My first post on this board. I've learned a lot about resonator by reading this board. At this moment I'm building a aragon guitar whit an oval sound hole. I have no idea what the soundhole is gonna do whit the sound. There is only one way to find it out. P1080384.pdf (79.7 KB)

Hi ernest80,
I am pleased you are enjoying reading this forum. There is a lot of information here!
Is your guitar going to be an archtop, or a flat-top. As an archtop, which is what an Aragon is, I can't see how a central oval soundhole could work?

It's an laminated archtop. After I did the soundhole a realised that it maybe was'nt such a great idea. I've Always loved archtops whit oval soundholes but I'm a bit worried about structural problems.

Wow! nice to see. This must be a complicated build? Is this the reason no builder has tackled this till now? Michael how does a "Aragon" sound?

Most of your structural problems could be overcome with a `neck stick` that goes to the end block. Most resonator guitars have a neck-stick that is fixed to the well and supported by props (but not fixed to the end block), by making it fix to the end block you would make the body more stable. Is your top glued? If so, you my have problems getting the `well` in . PT Here are a couple of Eko guitar I have fitted resonators to. Almost oval holes! They both have neck-to-block sticks and sound fine .

Michael Dunn has build two aragon guitars. It is not more complicated than a regular archtop guitar.

They are beautiful guitars to play and sound more like an archtop jazz guitar, than a resonator guitar. I can't find anything on the Internet, but Canadian luthier, Michael Dunn, has made his version of an Aragon. Shine On Michael

The coverplate is not glued in and it has a well. The national aragon has an neck stick like a dobro branded guitar. Thanks, I think it's a good idea to fix the stick to the end block.

Today I put strings on it for the first time. One time whit the cover plate without holes in it. It ditn't sound good. Great bass but the high strings sounded very muffled. The Second time without the cover plate. Great sound. Very Django indeed. Now I just hae to put as many hole in the coverplate as I can.

Hi there !
Wow ! Pretty good sounding and excellent sustain.
What brand of cone do you have in there ?
The bass component sounds excellent - even through my ipad speakers !
Aesthetics of the central soundhole not my cup of tea, but fantastic effort overall though. You should be proud of yourself. I'm sure you are - rightly so !
Some better pics though please.

Thanks, I'm realyhappy about the sound of the guitar. It's the loudest resonator I've played. To be honest, I don't like the aesthetics either. I've made the central soundhole to make it sound less Django and a little more like a regular guitar. I'm going to to make better pics of it so you have a better look at my mistakes.
