I get a lot of funny looks from other slide players when I say I use 011 to 048 strings, here is someone who would say that's OK. I know some resonators will not give their best tone without a big top string, but I may go to Silk and Steel (I use `normal` 011/048 nickel) next time.(then just a few years practice and I may get close to Roy Rs tone) PT PS: I had to move a Lesley cab once, I still have back problems, so maybe I`ll just go for the un-amped tone? PPS: If you have not seen the video, this post may not be understood , so it will match most of my other posts....

Hmm...no anchoring the thumb back of neck on the twelfth fret AND finger poking through the slide.

Many years ago I did a double header workshop/show with Roy in Dublin and I enjoyed his company and his playing. He is a fine blues slide guitarist.
Apart from when he plays above the 12 fret, Roy's thumb is pretty much anchored at the back of the neck. His technique of bringing his thumb around and damping with it for playing above the 12th fret, is the technique I use, which I think I must have got from Roy that day in Dublin in 1996.
