Paid a visit to HMV in Oxford St today, and found the early recordings of Son House have been re-released. The album title is Clarksdale Moan, and is a twin CD package on "The Devil's Tunes" label. All tracks have been re-mastered and restored. The sound is stunning! IMO this is one not to be missed. Haven't tried iTunes but there is a website: www.easyaction.co.uk

I've googled the label and it basically re-masters of rock and roll stuff. They appear to be an English outfit. Some early Steve Marriott and the Small Faces etc, probably worth a look if you grew up with that stuff like I did.
The Son House record/cd is the only one of it's genre, so its a bit strange they should pick that to re-master, but good news for us!
Its £12.99 direct from Easy Action and HMV.
Personally I really like Son House, but like Charlie Patton, some of it is hard to hear but worth the effort. But this is a revelation.
You'll love it Michael

Forgot to add: Great liner notes too, some of it I haven't read before. As to whether its all true or just speculation, its anyone's guess, but it all adds to the romance.

Very handy - serendipitous, even - I'd just begun casting about for a decent Son House recording, so thanks for the 'heads up'. BTW, had a quick look at their site and I see they're doing a 10" vinyl version

Thanks for bringing these recordings to my attention as well, he's another I got to see as a girl and I haven't really listened much to him outside of that so I will be interested in checking out if it comes to Amazon or Itunes. Stefan Grossman posted a video of him discussing his reminiscences of Son House with Tom Feldmann recently, which reminded me of what a riveting performer he was - although if I remember he was one performer people really crowded up against to get a look at. If I remember correctly, peeking over someone's shoulder, he seemed to be in some intense fervor when he played and the light gleamed wildly off him and the resonator, his hands fluttered like a butterflies - it was jaw dropping!

I'm intrigued to know whether these are newly found 78s for the Paramount titles, a new re-mastering job has been done, or if they're the same as on Document, Yazoo or the Blues Images collections. Looks like the 10" is the 1928 Paramount titles.

Received my copy this morning, can't comment on whether the sound is improved as I'm not familiar with earlier releases but do have to say I'm very happy with it - makes me realise what a small selection of Son House's stuff I'd heard hitherto. The whole thing is just great, but I was especially bowled over by the stuff from Klack's Store with the added benefits of harp and mandolin (Leroy Williams and Fiddlin Joe Martin respectively according to the notes) Listening to it again now, for the 3rd time today

I have the early recordings on several cd's but they don't come close to the clarity that this production achieves.
There is mention in the liner notes that the recordings have been re-mastered and restored, sounds like they did a great job.

Thanks steadyrollinman,
I tried to buy it in HMV Wolverhampton to give them the business for stocking it but no joy. Then I tried the easyaction website but where I live isn't available in the drop down list at checkout :-( Fortunately it is available on amazon UK and it's cheaper!
Bill
PS I got a great email from the easyaction guys after I pointed out they didn't have my region in their list :-)
