This film of Mance playing Motherless Children is I think from a Les Blanc film? Wherever it comes from, it is a wonderful piece of film. Mance is flying with that pocket knife and his vibrato and tone with the knife remind me of Blind Willie Johnson.
Very cool!

I downloaded that David Jacobs Strain version a couple years back after hearing it o the AOL internet acoustic blues station ( if you've never checked it out, it's awesome! aolradio.slacker.com/?aolid=735 ). After hearing it, I searched high and low for more of the same kinda stuff (especially with him playing that Duolian) from him. Couldn't find anything else similar or that I liked.

Hi Michael, I was always thinking that about Mance Lipscomb and Motherless Children - I saw him live in Oklahoma around 1970, small venue, unamplified. What surprised me was how quiet he was in person after hearing the recordings of him - and soft spoken. I will always treasure going up to him and speaking with him for a few minutes after the performance. I don't remember much about it though, bless the 70's!I hope the forum doesn't mind the reminiscence!

....Of course, the documentary film is called 'A Well Spent Life' and was made by Les Blank.
Slide496, Paul Oliver (English writer of many great blues books) told me that when he spent a day with Mance in his hometown to record an interview and some music (this would be mid sixties), that Mance owned a small grass cutting business and before any interviews or guitar playing took place, that Paul was taken around town and shown all the lawns that Mance looked after. He was very proud of his grass cutting business.
Such a great musician, you are lucky to have seen him play!
