...This is Shahid Parvez Khan, one of Manish Pingle's teachers. Shahid is considered to be one of the great players around today and has made dozens of albums. His playing reminds me so much of blues guitar players.....
It starts off very gently, but at around 1:20 you will see what I am talking about....
Brilliant stuff!

Hi Michael - This is a new music for me and perhaps I am overwhelmed by the speed and number of notes played or it would be clearer if I saw you playing with Manish. I don't know if its a case of "getting" it, but if its something that has captured your ear I would be interested in learning how to connect - currently I hear it and I tense up What about the playing do you relate to that reminds you of blues guitar players and do you have any players in mind. Hi Harriet, you make an interesting point. All music is an acquired taste and I also think that hearing the right stuff to get you into it, can make a big difference. My introduction to really getting into Indian music, apart from the Beatles and Ravi Shankar, in my early teens, was hearing the inventor of Indian slide guitar, the great Brij Bhushan Kabra. His music is nothing like this sitar piece, it is gentle and does not have many notes. It is about as close to Blind Willie Johnson's 'Dark is the Night' as you can get. Have a listen to Shiv Kumar Sharma and Brij Bhushan Kabra album called 'The Call of the Valley', and Brij Bhushan Kabra album called 'Lure of the Desert'. These are two incredible albums which I am sure that many western people, especially open D sliders, would really like.
The comparisons with blues guitar in this instance, Shahid reminds me of guys like Albert Collins, Freddie King, Albert King... It is a very macho boastful approach, but also soulful and emotional.
The music that Manish, Gurdain and I played was very different to that..... It was blues and it rocked! We played some Fred McDowell tunes together that I am sure you would enjoy.
Check out The Call of the Valley!

Hi Michael, Thanks for taking the time - I've copied your recommendations and will follow through and give a chance. I understand what you mean about the approach now, but am limited by a lack of understanding of the Indian side. I get the language of one side and not the other.
I am looking forward to the DVD of the concert!!!
