Hi Crew,
As the subject of Muddy Waters is quite prominent in recent postings, thought I might throw in a very interesting story about the guitar featured on the cover of 'Live at the Newport Folk Festival' album.
There used to be a tiny music shop in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham called 'Bole Music' owned by a professional guitarist named Andy Bole. Back in the mid '90's there were mutterings in the local bluesers clique of an authentic Muddy Waters instrument hanging on the wall ~ we had to check this out!
Sure enough, hanging on the wall in the back room was a black acoustic guitar, badly scorched by fire with the album sleeve pinned next to it. I asked Andy the history of this piece, and apparently it was owned by Eric Clapton & resided at his Chelsea home. Eric suffered a bad house fire at his Chelsea home & many of his treasured guitars were burned beyond repair ~ the Muddy guitar was repairable, but Eric gave it to Andy as a 'Thank You' for playing backup guitar on several U.K gigs!
The shop closed down many years ago & I often wonder what happened to this guitar....
Slide On!
Ian.
