Curious about the tonal differences of strings on a reso, nickel vs phosphor bronze, etc. What strings do you guys use? Are the differences more pronounced on a resonator? I have yet to buy my first resonator, but on a regular flat top, I greatly prefer a "vintage" bronze (like GHS) to phosphor bronze. (Too frosty sounding). What have you guys tried, and what is the verdict? And do your choices differ for wooden bodied resonators? Let's talk gauges, too. And Michael, what strings will come stock on the upcoming '28 model, and what gauge? Also, I generally tune to Eb in standard, so when in open tunings I am a full step low. To drive the cone, should I go with a super heavy gauge?

Hi TN Pat, recently I seem to be putting nickel on everything including flattops. I like phosphor bronze strings on my tricone, but I get on better with nickel. Sound wise less volume and not as rich sounding but it suits me. I play mostly in dropped tunings so the heavier the better. At the moment I'm running standard nickel (plated steel) 13's with the first and second strings replaced with a 22 wound)2nd and a 15 (plain) 1st.
I think a resonator would show a greater difference than an acoustic mainly because they are louder. Musical style will dictate your own guage but heavier strings will make the cone(s) work harder. As in all things it will boil down to individual preference.
