I'm no expert either, been playing slide for a couple of years, but here are my views. MM has an introduction to slide guitar which I like as it goes into the basics and a brief overview of the different rhythms associated with slide guitar so it gives you an idea of differentiating between delta, north hill country and chicago from the getgo. And there are portions where you can join in and play with him. I wish I had started with that, but I was quite relieved to have found it after working with Stefan Grossman's bottleneck slide lessons - although I learned a tremendous amount from his dvd lessons - his versions to my ear have a country ragtime feel to them and alternating bass.
I currently work with Tom Feldmann's slide guitar lessons from the workshop and he addresses different time signatures and breaks away from a strict alternating bass so its more of a complex study and he will demonstrate a full performance with singing, vibrato, dancing around a note, left and right hand damping, doublestops - the musical vocabulary and conventions of the song he's teaching. He teaches and performs as himself, so there's stuff to be learned from the pace he drives the song along with and his vocal integration and phrasing, same as the artist he's teaching.

I have also used different dvds and also those instant access ones. I think that those covered by Tom Feldman have been most interesting. Nowadays I'm pushing myself more towards listening original records and trying get same feeling with my guitar. But this is still very difficult. I believe that learning is a process and it takes time. ... and we never come perfect For me to encouragement from my guitar teacher here in Finland and Michael here in forum have actually played most important role. I can play and try and love playing. BR, Pertti

Don't throw the DVDs out when you think you have done the 'course'.
I regularly go back over them.
A few years back, I (tried) to learn the Rev Gary Davis collection of tunes - I am not much good at the Davis stuff, not from want of trying, but from the lessons I eventually developed a thumb and index picking style, and then for practice, went over previous DVDs again but with the new right hand style.

I know it is not Delta Blues, but after talking about the Rev Davis stuff, I had a bit more of a go at his Gospel tunes from SGGW and except for the one particular horror nasty rotten chord that I couldn't ever do, and may probably never be able to do, the rest I have gotten pretty good at while I have not been doing them, if that makes any sense! So I guess what I am trying to say is that by working on similar material to the stuff I couldn't get has opened a few more doors without me knowing it. Here is the set in question and the tune I have trouble with the most is "Oh Glory, How Happy I Am" (G chord at the 5th fret big problem....) www.guitarvideos.com/styles-1/gospel/the-gospel-guitar-of-rev-gary-davis-4-dvd-setDoesn't matter - they are all worth having a go at if any one is interested. The only other technique thing I had this much trouble with is a segment on a right hand damping finger dance - back to that next! BluesKing777.
