Mick,
Like you Ive played electric guitar for years, mainly rock, mainly rhythm, but have always lusted after a resonator, having always appreciated the sounds of the old Delta bluesmen (and women) ......I came across the MM forum and MM/Busker guitars quite by accident, and that sowed the seed of an idea....... Ive been off work the last month due to illness and so have read just about every post on this forum......sad eh? Anyroadup I decided to buy an MM Lightning, based a lot on what Ive read on here. Michael is fiercly protective of his reputation and I guess knows all there is to know about what makes a good resonator instrument. I haven't read on here of anyone who has not been happy with their guitar, and that speaks volumes. Especially in today's grumbling society, where it is all too easy to anonymously moan about anything and everything. There are some very experienced players on here, who have had the benefit of owning some very expensive guitars to judge the MMs by. I know nothing about the instrument you tried in Gods own county, (I'm an exiled Yorkshireman) but I do know that several manufacturers have jumped on the Reso bandwagon and have produced some very poorly in conceived products, and there are some big names among them. What I'm trying to say I suppose is that my understanding is that I will get the real deal, built in the tradition of the originals, that will sound right and play right, with a frankly old fashioned attitude towards customers that is sadly lacking in most commerce today. OK, it may not be the best quality woods in the known world, but then it aint the price of a National. But I know it will do the job, no frills no BS, built to a price, but no way tacky cheap. Hell, if I really don't like it I can return it, for a full refund and it will only have cost me the postage. (living on the IOW, thats half the cost of a car ferry fare anyway)
So, I guess I'm taking a chance, but it's a reasonably educated one......I'm semi retired and need something for the winter, when I can't be a beach bum! I'm really looking forward to it......I'm really confident in the product.
Good luck with your choice!
Paul
