Derek Trucks is an amazing slide guitarist and guitarist. I have a lot of his stuff and it's great listening. Also appreciate the "Eastern" influence on his work now. It's just incredible. Thanks for posting the vid DRed ......awe inspiring! Also what a great background and musical family. The Allmans are still my favorite "southern" rock band if I can use that term. As a side note I know Johnny Neel who played keys for a time with the Allmans and Gov't Mule. Johnny is a blind pianist who grew up in my hometown Wilmington, Delaware. Shared the bill with him on a few outdoor gigs on the Market Street Mall way back in the day. Derek being surrounded by so many legends as a young kid, man that is awesome.

Absolutely!
I have seen this film before, it really is quite something. Derek Trucks grew up around legendary players and the music comes naturally to him, especially that Allman Brothers Southern Rock stuff. Thank you for posting it on here.

One of my all time favourite albums is the Allman Brothers "At the Filmore East" - a must for anybody's collection.

DRed
What a great album that was and still is. I believe I read some years ago it was considered one of the best live albums ever recorded, if not the best ever recorded. Perhaps Michael could shed some light on that, but I'm sure I read that at one time.

I wish there was film of Duane and Clapton playing "Mean Old World" on resonators. This would probably be the next best thing:

Duane Allman played mostly in open E tuning, and so do all the guitarists who play in the Duane style. You don't have to play in the key of E. It is great for playing in most keys, especially D and C because your home fret is in the centre of the fretboard, so you have a lot of room to play below and beyond the home fret. In C you have a whole octave. Also in open E you have more tension in the strings which does give a certain feel to the whole thing. Have a look at this film of Jeremy Spencer playing It Hurts Me Too in open E tuning in the key of C. There is a thread about Jeremy that is worth reading... michaelmesser.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=music&action=display&thread=4308And now back to the subject matter of this thread...... Hello All
I know this thread is from awhile ago, but can someone tell if Warren Haynes is in open D or G? or even standard? I know Michael said Derek was in open E .....I love this tune and thought I had it down, then went and found a tab that say's Warren in is open G .....but when I tried to follow along with the vid, open G just didn't sound right, of course it could just be my playing.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jaco,
I am not near a guitar at this moment (most unusual!), but the tune in is the key of 'D' and I think they are both tuned to open 'D'.
I had at first thought Warren was in dropped 'D', but I am pretty sure it is just open 'D'.
