Love his songs and guitar picking Texas Troubadour compilation well worth having Townes was genius songwriter, there is no question about that. I used to play this song in a band I was in for a while. It was National Debt with Ron Smith and I was the Dobro player. Last summer I spent a very enjoyable evening in Bristol with Steve Earle, and Townes Van Zandt's name came up quite a lot. Steve knew Townes well and of course, Steve's son, Justin Townes Earle tragically died aged 38 in 2020 from an accidental overdose. As well as his own mastery of songwriting, Townes Van Zandt covered some incredible songs like this one by Mick Jagger & Keith Richards. Eventually Townes' demons and use of alcohol and chemicals finally caught up with him and he died aged 52 on January 1st 1997, apparently from "natural causes" Shine On Michael

Such a great feel from TJW and his band. And of course he was an extremely talented songwriter with hits written for some of the world's biggest artists.... Elvis Presley and Tina Turner were a couple that recorded his songs

Voice like smooth liquor, Strat-guitar tone and chops to die for. Long live TJW!

Andy Hi Andy, I do know that Rory covered Tony Joe's "As The Crow Flies" and both versions are excellent. Rory was a bigger artist than many people realise, he sold more than 30 million albums. Back then it was pop music and and he had a massive following. In my teens used to go to Rory's gigs and was a big fan of his music. After the shows we, a venue full of teenage boys & girls, all used to queue up to shake his hand and everyone said the same thing to him..."great gig Rory" and he graciously thank each one of us. Many years later I met Rory when he came to one of my shows, which was a great honour for me. He was as gracious and gentle as he was all those years earlier. In 1995 while recording my album, MOONbeat, we got the news by phone that Rory had died. The album was dedicated to Rory Gallagher. I was always more interested in his live performances than his recordings. He was such a great performer and his audiences loved him. My favourite Rory Gallagher record is "Live In Europe" because it represents those times when I was a teenager queuing up to shake his hand. Shine On Michael

Unfortunately I never got to see Rory live, much to my eternal regret. What a player and, as you say, what a great guy. I remember the day he died too, I was at work and an Irish girl who worked with me came up to me and, quite tearfully, told me the news as she knew I was a fan. I have some great DVDs and CDs of his playing and, of course, I am a big fan of his acoustic playing especially. What a compliment to you that he came to one of your gigs, that must have felt fantastic! I shall check out ‘Moon beat’. Best wishes Andy

He'll Have To Go....
I love this Jim Reeves' song. In the hands of Ry Cooder & Flaco Jimenez it became a whole new song. Wonderful.

can't believe i'm up this time of night/morning. the CMEs gotta be coming on like aircraft search lights. even a coupla gulps from the gentleman jack bottle ain't put me back in bed yet. haven't been up at this early since i retireded.
might as well make the beast of it.
Zevon, Yokum and Jimenez. whatta combination. [warning Yokum has had own way with the original lyrix. rumor mill has it Zevon liked his spin on them.]
IMO, the onliest place it gets darker and holds more pressure than this song is the bottom of the Mariana Trench:
Dwight Yoakam & Flaco Jimenez
I hear Mariachi static on my radio The tubes they glow in the dark And I'm there with you in Ensenada And I'm here in Echo Park.
Carmelita, hold me tighter Yeah, I think I'm feeling down And I'm all strung out on heroin On the outskirts of town.
Well I sold my Smith and Wesson And I went down to meet my man He hangs out down on Alvarado Street At the Pioneer Chicken Stand.
Carmelita, hold me tighter Yeah, I think I'm sinking down And I'm all strung out on heroin On the outskirts of town.
--- Instrumental ---
Carmelita, hold me tighter Yeah, I think I'm sinking down And I'm all strung out on heroin On the outskirts of town.
Well I'm sittin' here playing solitaire With my pearl handled deck The county won't give me no more methadone And they cut off your welfare check.
Carmelita, hold me tighter Yeah, I think I'm sinking down And I'm all strung out on heroin On the outskirts of town.
Carmelita, hold me tighter Yeah, I think I'm sinking down And I'm all strung out on heroin On the outskirts of town. Yeah, Yeah, Yeah Oh Yeah...
nighty night y'all, mitchfit

This is from a wonderful Flaco Jiminez album called "Partners". The video you have shared doesn't feature Flaco, Here is the song with Flaco & Dwight...
This is a good one....
Back in the 90s I met Flaco through a mutual friend, Terry Clarke, and played with him a couple of times. Flaco is a great man and with his own band used to tour here a lot in the 80s and 90s. Along with his friend and bajo sexto player Oscar Tellez and their rhythm section, they played many shows in the UK.
That's all for now folks!

Carmelita is one of my favourite songs of Warren Zevon. "I hear mariachi static on the radio and the tubes they glow in the dark" - this verse makes me actually hear mariachi trumpets through the static noise, even though it's not really in the song, it’s just a suggestion. That’s magic.
Next to the "mariachi static" I admire his verse about "air-conditioner hum" from Desperado Under The Eaves, I find this last verse very funny.

^^^^ MM said, ..."The video you have shared doesn't feature Flaco"... saw same video from album you uploaded in search of the live one i recalled. transferred the name by mistake. ooops. took a while to find on internet. not a surprise because "Carmelita" was not included on any of Yoakum's albums for obvious reasons. found out Scott Joss did play on many of the albums Yoakum did release. learned how to play violin from Buck Owen's ex, Jana Jae. this ties both Joss and Yoakum into early "Bakersfield Sound" era together. found and loaded a photo that seems about the same age range as Joss at about 30 seconds into Carmelita live recording video. my guess only, but looks like him. mitchfit Attachments:
