When I bought my National Tricone it was in what I assume to be its original case which Vintage Nationals told me it had been lying in since the 70s. However, there's some slight pitting on the sides of the guitar at the points where it touches the velvet lining of the case. Could this be a reaction with the lining? It's hardly noticeable but I'm worried that keeping it in the case may cause further damage. Has anyone had any experience of this?
Cheers, Bill

My # ll has suffered from the same problem. The previous owner told me that it came to him in an old, but non original, case and had developed some pitting due to interaction with the lining or adhesives. While using that case he dressed the guitar in an old T shirt! I received it in an old National case (inside a very substantial plywood coffin) with a very worn 'Devil's Slide' T shirt tucked in the end.

Hi Colin, I assume you're talking about the tricone you got from Michael Dunn. When I emailed him about that guitar when it was up for sale, he mentioned about the reaction to the case. That was what made me suspect my case as being the cause. It's interesting that yours is a non original case which makes me wonder about mine, would an original National case cause such a reaction?

Any case can do that if the guitar is stored where it can condensate.

Don't worry brothers. I doubt very much the purple lined original cases are causing any pitting. These cases do seem prone to retain moisture if they get close to it. I"d guess more likely the case was near moisture and it wicked up into the case, possibly causing tarnish where it contacts the guitar. I would not be worried about leaving my Nat in an original case other than they are flimsly and don't protect very well. Best, Len

Thanks Wheldon and Lenny,
That's put my mind at rest. Thinking about it, I've seen that pitting on aluminium cases when they've been left in damp conditions. I'll get a better case for it eventually, but for now I'll stick with the original. It's usually on a stand anyway as I play it all the time.
