Sorry I can't make this as entertaining as DaveReds or Mark Makins recent posts, but I'm after a bit of advice. I'm giving Son House's 'Death Letter' a work out, and (excuse my lack of musical education) on the 8th beat of most bars, he gets this sound I can't quite replicate. Its like a whack with the slide, or a thumb slap, or a string snap or something, or combinations of all. I'm also guessing he doesn't use picks on it, but I could be wrong. I'm trying it in open d, and this sound is on the dropped note (f) before the the g barres - anyone reckon they know what he's doing? Cheers TT

Hi TT
Check out this youtube clip
He plays it in Open G with a slightly flattened B string and a very thin copper tube as a bottleneck.

Thanks very much Mark - it explains many things. What a great version - very energetic too.

One thing I've always noticed was that his slide is very slanted when he plays....

Cheers gaucho - explains a few things too.
If I nail a reasonable version, I might stick it up here - it'll be my open d version though...
