Last week I ordered some CDs from the DocRecs sale (including the splendid Sylvester Weaver Vol. 1), one of which was a 2 CD Essential Sleepy John Estes (for £2.99!!). This contained quite a few Estes tracks I didn't have, one of which is called You Shouldn't Do That. I expected it to be similar to the song you and Ed play on the ST DVD and it was - apart from almost entirely different lyrics and a refrain line which goes "Shouldn't say that, shouldn't say that!" ! My question is: did you re-write the words or is there another version I haven't heard?
Cheerily,
Gerry C

Hello Gerry, The Should'nt Do That song played by Ed & me in the ST DVD is Casey Bell Weldon's version of the song. Like many folk songs, there are lots of versions of 'almost identical' songs. There is another that I know Ronnie Lane used to do, which is also called Should'nt Do That. John Estes may have been the originator of the song. He wrote some classics...Going to Brownsville, Diving Duck.....and it seems... Should'nt Do That! I recorded Should'nt Do That on my first album, Diving Duck, and it has been a staple of duo, trio and full band shows for 20 years. It's great with Louie on the Turntable - we use Casey Bill for the backing vocals and occasionally give him a slide guitar solo Shine On, Michael
