Realise this is a bit late in the day, but if anyone was looking out for good, cheap Valve amp, I sugest trying the laney LC15. My local guitar shop had one in 3 years ago, the owner sugested I try it, 15 Watts class A for £220, has really good clean/overdriven sound. More flexible then the old Marshal, which I promtly sold for alot more than I paid for it! I played a few pub gigs and has been great. Not sure about the Muddy tone though.... Just thought I mention a good sounding cheap amp.

Hi, Is this in correct starter level Squier Vintage Modified Thinline Telecaster with f-hole. Available around 300 € in "the other German music shop". Or are those with thicker bodies and no f-hole better (they are a litte bit cheaper) Or should it be totally something else. More solid body...or Pertti

Hi Pertti,
Squier Teles' are very good value for money. It is a matter of taste, but I would prefer thinline with F-hole.

I ended up getting an Epiphone valve Junior combo, which I love, and have already modified a bit. There are a whole lot of mainly States based forums dedicated to modding these amps, and with a little knowledge of soldering and a few components these amps can be made to sound glorious. Try www.valvejunior.com or the Gibson/Epiphone forum. You can revalve them as well, and there are many suppliers of all kinds of valves in this country too. Every mod I make to the amp, improves its tone, and sound, and it is easily loud enough to do small gigs with, a five watt valve combo, will be as loud as a 25 watt solid state one. Thru another cab, this little beast is awesome. And it cost me £90, and with the few mods I have done has cost me no more than £30. I'd recommend one if you are on a budget, and they look cute too! Hi Andy, I watched a guy play a Fender pedal steel through one of those Epiphone Valve Juniors last week - nice tone for a very, very cheap valve amp Have you tried a Jensen 8" speaker in it? Robn

These little amps look great value for money. The modifications are interesting. Old valve amps are so simple, I am sure if you know what you are doing you can get them really good.
Robn - a pedal steel through a 5 watt amp....I bet it sounded like a Hammond organ!Normally Pedal steel players like big amps and big speakers for a clean sound. However, recently BJ Cole was over at my house and we tried the Bigsby pedal steel through a Marshall battery amp .....not idea but not bad either!

As far as the Jensen 8" is concerned, opinions differ as to how it improves the sound, and for many modders its often the last thing they end up doing. The main ones on the newer amps are to change the input resistors so that it runs brighter and is more touch sensitive. Then people tweak the stage between the preamp and the power amp stage, to get a bit more gain, and I have added a control to this section to give a bit of a buffer on the gain at top volumes. Then folks replace the valves with something a bit more classier. Then most people replace the Output transformer, as I plan to do when it arrives. Apparently that completely opens up the tone of this little amp, more volume, more efficiency, more of everything really. And at a cost of about an hour and £22! I have a newer model with a Weber in it and I like the sound of the speaker, certainly it sounds better than many other speakers that I have put it thru. I may replace it in the future, but I'll do these other mods first. My lap steel thru it sounds ace, as do all my guitars. It also sounds great even with the cheapest of effects pedal. I have a cheap nasty danelectro echo, which sounds naff thru anything else, thru this amp, its great. And the greatest fun, is at top volume, if you can find somewhere that will allow you to do so. A resonator with a magnetic pickup, can be made to balance on the edge of feedback, for some great slide self indulgence. This cheap little amp has got me back into playing my electric guitars more as well. Andy S
