Hi Michael, Do you use the optional accessory remote commander with the H4n or is it just a bit of bling? Is hand noise that much of a problem, especially with the newer rubberised coating? These things should not be optional extras in my opinion. Can you imagine buying a Sony DVD player without one being included? It's not as though they're even inexpensive! I ask because sometimes you see the H4n packaged with the remote. Cheers,

Hi Steve,
I don't have the remote control unit. I was going to get one when I first bought the H4N, but everywhere was out of stock and now I haven't got one! I guess I never will get one now, but they are useful. I agree - listing it as an accessory and charging a high price is not a great way to go.
I do not have problems with hand noise from pressing buttons, but I always try to allow a few seconds of silence before and after a recording. That way if there is any clicks from the machine they are not a problem.
What is a bit of a problem with the Zoom H4N is that when it is fitted on a microphone stand and the stand is on a wood floor, foot tapping can sound pretty loud. I learnt this the hard way from screwing up some live recordings. To eliminate this I either stand the mic stand on a carpet, or on three hard foam spongy stuff pads I made. It's the stuff they pack computers, TVs and hi-fi in.
I guess it could be eliminated by the Zoom technicians, but it would make the unit more expensive. The reason it happens is because the casing, although quite adequate, is cheap.

Thanks Michael. It wont be on my list then, but I know that eventually, I'll end up eBaying one. The clicks and noises are at least manageable in the way that you have described. More than can be said about motor noise on my minidisc recorder...

Not sure how much they are in UK - they are now about 150 quid (sorry no pound key on this keyboard) over here.

Hi All Well I decided to get a H4n and have now been using it for a few weeks instead of my boss micro br. Its a bit more fiddly to use than the Boss and is not as "guitarist" friendly either. Selecting patches, onboard tuner etc are not as easy as on the Boss. But the internal mics are way way better than the br and the auto level function is a godsend. Follow this link to hear a live recording from a little gig we had last weekend. Sorry for the less than pristine playing but it should give you an idea of the mic quality soundcloud.com/bottleneck-bob/walkinbluesliveCheers Rob

Hi Bob,
You are probably right about it being a bit more fiddly to use than others, but I have never used the on-board tuner, patches, or auto record level functions. I only use it as a four track recorder in the highest possible resolution. I don't mix on it or use any functions that it offers.
I will listen to your recording later today when I have a moment

Bob,
sounds good...gotta nice early "zephyr" sound to it. the lady's vocals sound very much like Candy Givens did in that band. {when Tommy Bolin was still with them {us}, and they were still playing the good old rot gut blues.} is that your peavey delta?
strictly a non-pro opinion, but the vocals seem to need some more Db to my ears.
keep up the good work!

Hi Mitchfit Thanks for listening. You're dead right about the vocals tho. The guy who was recording it for me had the mic pointing at a daft angle which lost a lot of the vocals. Its not the peavey tho. Space was of a premium in the car so I took my little ZT lunchbox amp and rothwell hellbender pedal instead. Cheers
