Hi, what would be the ideal height for strings above the frets for slide and fingered playing and where do you measure it? Is it referenced at the nut? I guess it's a compromise but what seems to work well please?

That's a bit of a difficult one Smojo coz the amount of neck relief (slight bow in the neck centered around the 7th fret and adjusted by the truss rod) and the angle that the neck has been set at in relation to the body will make a difference to playability of a guitar for slide and standard tuning assuming two guitars set with the same action.
Action is normally measured at the 12th fret and is the distance between the top of the fret and the bottom of the string being measured. The gap is usually slightly higher on the bass string than on the treble string, so you sometimes see two figures quoted for the action of a guitar.
I have my guitar set up for a hybrid action (for both slide in open tuning and standard tuning finger picking) and have an action of 2.75mm (measured in open G) on both bass and treble (I tend to dig in a bit on my 1st string so I have set it up at the same height as the bass side). But as I said, these measurements suit the amount of relief and the neck set of my guitar - they may not suit yours!

cheers Robn, I appreciate the points you made but I was thinking for a compromise the height at the nut might be more important than at the 12th as most of my fingered playing is down at the nut end. Too low means crashes on the frets with the slide but too high affects the intonation when fretted and hard to hold down clean notes. Is there a rough guide to a decent nut height?
