Does anyone know of a surface mounted neck pickup that would work for phosphor bronze strings?
I've got a couple of sound hole pickups for my acoustic guitars that work OK and I am looking for something similar that I can mount just at the end of the fret board on my wood bodied reso. I have a Fishman passive fitted but it is too harsh and has too much feedback for my busking amp. I'm after that mellow, controllable mag p/u sound but want to stay with phosphor bronze strings if at all possible. Mic'ing up isn't an option as I use my amp's balanced input for voice/harp. I need to plug into the guitar input hence the search for a mag p/u.
Any ideas - the cheaper the better!!!!
Thanks
Robn

Hi Robn,
I love the sound of magnetic pickups on both acoustics & Nationals. As for which one to get, I am not able to advise as I don't really know what products are available. I used to use a cheap sound-hole Schaller magnetic PU on my Dobro. Strip off all the bits and just stick the PU onnthe guitar with double sided tape. If that PU is still available it worked really well, but I bought mine 23 years ago!
Shine On, Michael.

Thanks Michael,
I saw a guy, Ewan Blackledge, busking in Kendal town centre this weekend. He had an old Schaller stuck to the body of his tricone. It had a great sound. His tricone was quite interesting – Ewan said it was made by someone in the Cumbria area a good few years ago (looked like a very good copy of a National Style 1). It had a “J” on a shield on the headstock.

Robn, If you want to check out the Norah Jones & the Handsome band tour dvd you will see Robbie Macintosh using a Dave King surface mounted pickup on Robbies Fine resophonic, enough of an endorsment? Regards Lee.

Thanks Lee,
I've just tracked down an old post from Snakehips on the IGS forum talking about Dave King's p/u. I'll give Dave a call to see if he still has any available.

Hi Robn I heard about this forum from Ian McWee/Diamond Bottlenecks. I got what you are looking for. A top mounted mag pickup for resophonic guitars. It is only 6mm/.24" !!! It can be fixed with double side tape(I use "tesa power strips"). It works together very well with amps and also with a PA without feeback problems! It likes Phosphor strings very much! The sound is clear and strong. It sounds even good with distortion. I designed this pickup together with an experienced pickup builder who is very engaged in this project. I had the idea from the Barcus Berry Dobro Pickups that had been available in the 80th. But mine sounds much cleaner and is made in vintage style. The retail version of the pickup will be available in spring 2007! You can send me a mail for further informations. Pictures of a prototype of the pickup you can see on my website www. atte.de It is allready stage proofed! Slide on Hermann from germany www.atte.dewebmaster@atte.de
