Newtone Strings- noise from new

Hello,

This could be just me, but does anyone else get a bit more finger noise from Newtone National strings when they first put them on?. Or do I have to accept the ideas that my fingers are getting noisier.

Hi Jimmy,

All acoustic guitar strings need a period of "playing in". Most are a little noisy, metalic and jangly until they settle down. They then go through a "sweet" period before going dull. Newtones need playing in like any other string - their advantage rests in both their great tone and the length of time they stay sweet. ;D

Thanks Robn. I realise all strings need playing in, however in comparison to d'adario and other manufactured brands they seem to need alot more playing in. I do agree though I hardly have to change them. Maybe I just need to play more.

I think that you might be right. D'Addarios play in pretty quickly - but they sound pants on my reso (They are OK on my travel guitar though) I do think about when to change my Newtones so they have a chance to play in before going out to an open mic etc

Mind you, the DRs I have tried take even longer to settle

Hey Jim, I've found that using Fast Fret slickens up the strings & reduces finger-noise..

I fitted a set of Newtones a fortnight ago to my acoustic that I use for slide and finger style.
Slide they are great they really sing but when I play fingerstyle the nickel wound third sounds like I am strangling a mouse. I play for about an hour a day on average and I think it is starting to settle down but it is annoying. Not sure that I will invest in anymore apart from on my Reso.

I'd completely forgot that I had some Fast Fret in the back of my strings draw until I saw your post. I tried it out on the Newtones on my reso for the first time this evening and my glass slide nearly shot across the room

You are right about it reducing finger noise and it reduces slide noise as well - if you can hang on to it

It felt like I was playing ground wound strings (like D'Addario Flat Tops) but with the Newtone sound. I think I'll keep using it for a few days to see how I get on.

I have used Newtone strings on all my guitars since 1991 and I have never noticed a noise problem. I have never used Fast Fret or any other brand of string lubricant. I put strings on my guitars and play them until they go dull and then I change them. This is not meant to be a sarcastic answer, I really have never had any problems with string noise from Newtones or any other brands. I do prefer strings that are not brand new, but playing them in only takes a couple of songs. I think the problem is that factory produced strings are wound at such a high speed that the heat removes some of the brightness and the life of the string.

Hi all, just to clarify - the Fast Fret's main purpose for me is keeping the strings clean & preserving their longevity; the reduced finger-noise is a fringe benefit, it's primary function is that with regular use, I find that a set of strings will last 4 - 5 times longer before going dead - which, apart from the obvious economic advantage, means not having to play in new strings to get them to that sweet spot! A product that actually does what it claims..

I hope I didn't sound like I was bashing Newtone. I use them alot and like them.

They do last me a very long time.
