::)Hi evryone, I am looking to get into slide guitar and there seems to be loads of choice as far as resonators go. Does anybody own or know of Johnson guitars, what are they like for slide playing, finger picking ? I have to go in at the low budget end due to commitments (kids) I have read the reviews on Regal, Vintage etc. and I have seen a Galveston in a local second hand shop but I dont know anything about them either. Hope you can help.

Johnson guitars are Vintage under a different brand name. At the budget end of the market it's very common for the same guitar to be marketed under different brand names, and basically there's only a couple of factories turning them out. They're usually either steel bodied and Korean or brass bodied and Chinese.
With all of the far eastern imports it's better to actually see them and play them before you buy. The quality control is variable so you can get good ones and bad ones depending on how well they've been put together and set up. Look very carefully at the neck/body join and try to pick one with a reasonable action but with the top of the bridge close to the handrest and a good bit of bridge showing above the biscuit.

Hi, I have a Johnson JM988. I am not very happy with it. If I compare it to my Ozark 3616 deluxe I think Johnson is difficult to play. But I have seen similar Johnsons that are better than mine, so I believe it is just like LousianaGreys's post said that you have to try. Check also Pete Woodman for upgraded ones. It might be worth of that. Pertti

HI I also own a Johnston JM 988, its the first reso I have owned, I think it is a good entry level guitar to get started on but bear in mind what Luisiana Grey has mentioned , or you could end up with a right "Dog" of a guitar . I suppose the problem we all have when purchasing our first reso is what should a good reso sound like ? I must be the only person who has not seen a National let alone played one in a music shop to compare it with. After a year of using the johnston for getting the feel of playing resos I must admit reading about and hearing the National Resorocket seems a quite tempting purchase ......... will I have to sell some of my other guitars to finance it though .......... I don't like the idea of doing that ....... oh well I'll have to save for it ..... regards Growler
