hey i want to put an unwound string in the g position on my acoustic for lap slide, the tuning will be around a, certainly no higher (guitar tuned between c and d), and i was wondering basically how heavy i can go on that string before a) it snaps and b) it sounds crap. also anyone know any websites i can order such string gauges as singles, preferably in england? thanks

Hi Vivek, Contact Newtone Strings in Heanor, Derbyshire. They are the manufacturers of Michael Messer National Guitar Strings and you can order any gauge. Go to www.newtonestrings.com or call 01773 714409 and speak to Malcolm Newton. Be careful with that plain G, don't go too heavy because they sound dull and they snap! I would advise you to get a few gauges and try them. Newtone Strings are a small factory and small orders can take a while, so don't expect a 24 hour delivery. However....what you can expect is a personal service from Newtone Strings, who in my opinion make the finest strings available. Shine On, Michael.
