ok guys help me out here. i am planning to customise a single cone resonator to have, lets say, eight normal strings, and undeneath these strings to have twelve sympathetic strings, running through same bridge at a different level. its for lap style by the way. bearing in mind that the symps will only be like a 009 gauge, and that the angle the strings go over the bridge will not be too steep, do u thing the cone can handle the pressure? i know there are 12 string ones, so should be similar, no? oh yeah, 2 more strings actually, chikari strings. like banjo high string. cheers

Hi Vivek,
You got me there!
I am aware of how Indian slide guitars are set up and strung - and I may be wrong but I don't believe that a budget-priced resophonic guitar will be any good with all those strings and adjustments There are many reasons why I don't think it will work - / 1>the body of Ozarks, Vintages and other budget resos are not strong enough and will bend under the pressure / 2 >the cone is not made to take that pressure and even with almost zero break angle the pressure will choke a cheap cone and crush a good one / 3 >the whole concept of regular sized metal bodied Nationals with 12 strings is not great and in my opinion they do not sound very good. The 12 string National Havana that I play is a totally different instrument with a large wooden body, and even that has to be kept in low tunings or it chokes the tone.
However....saying all that.....don't let me stop you. I might be completely wrong and you will make a wonderful guitar.....good luck!
Shine On, Michael.

harshness. well, dunno if i wanna spend that money if it ain't gonna work. would tricone system not take it either then? i suppose i'd have to get it custom built then. sigh. when i'm a rich doctor perhaps.

A tricone system would be worse! If I were in your position and wanted to build an Indian slide guitar on a small budget I would buy a cheap wooden acoustic flat-top guitar and customize it. Many cheap acoustics are built with plywood and are very strong, which is what you are looking for. And....if it goes wrong, you haven't lost much. Maybe other forum members will have different opinion, but that's what I reckon.
