If you suspect you are developing an unhealthy interest in guitars and related subjects - dont tell the missus.
Having spent a couple of hours talking about a new house and our up and coming wedding - we were sat in cosy bliss on the sofa. I got asked what i was thinking about.
The reply of ' i think im gonna buy a tricone' was not popular & the room temperature dropped afew degress in the ensuing silence. Apparently its all i think about. Which is not true, after all theres beer & curry for a start ;D
I guess i should of said 'Teracotta' or 'Kittens'

If you spend a period of time being drunk for days on end and then say " I'm cooling it on the drink - I'm getting more into music" it's viewed as a positive step. Buying guitars then becomes "investing what I would have wasted on drink" Bernie

I speak as a fortunate soul who has a wife who not only likes slide guitar playing, but also loves having guitars around the place because they look good too. My tip, hang them on your walls. I own about 15 stringed instruments altogether, and many of them are hung up around the house, where not only do they enhance the decor, but are there when you feel like a quick twiddle. My resonators are hung in the most prominent places, because she says they look "cool". Although she doesnt play herself she appreciates guitars diverse and aesthetic nature and even suggests which ones look better where. She seems to like my collection of instruments or so she tells me anyway? Mind you, wall space is limited in our house and some of them are in a storeroom, and I do have one hung up in my workroom at work, for lunchbreak playing.
I remember reading on another forum about the same issue, loads of blokes bemoaning the fact that G.A.S. was a habit which invariably was not shared with the same enthusiasm by women, and then there was this wonderful post by a woman who had the same problem, justifying her ever increasing collection to her husband! She was talking about the fact that she would get a new guitar, and just swap them round cases and stands, tell him she had "just borrowed it", all the things we are all familiar with. Just to prove that its not only us chaps who have this to deal with.
The funniest was the guy who managed to replace his top of the range acoustics every two years or so and his partner never noticed!!!
Useful tips that I have used:-
a) There are a great number of women musicians who have collections of guitars, they are to be cited as an example at every opportunity.
b) As far as house buying, surely you need to move house so that "you can have room for more guitars.....!"
c) It could be worse, you could collect something bigger, uglier and messier than guitars.
Yours
Andy S

Hi there ! Oh boy ! You sure answered that one wrong !! As someone recently married, I have gone through all the stuff you just mentioned, fitchmeister. Not necessarily about guitars, but not being on the same wavelength as your partner all the time - and how not being on the same wavelength at certain times turns out to be a "big" problem when other times it is not. ; ) However, my new wife is pretty good on the whole guitar thing. Just before we got engaged, I had about 12 guitars. I saw a nice 1935 Duolian on eBay that I was lusting after. I said to her " you'll probably think I'm mad or daft, but I've seen this great guitar on eBAy, at a great price and am thinking about going for it. You know I've got loads of guitars already - what do you think ?" Her reply was "I think you should go for it. It sounds like you really want it. Its your passion. Go for it." At that moment, I knew for sure she was the girl for me !! Said guitar for £1250 : (acoustic gig in a bar in Spain) Said wife (wedding snap) : I played my Style "O" at the wedding, with the band. If I had a false beard on, I'd have looked just like Bob Brozman !!!

There are a few girl G.A.S. sufferers too! So far I've managed to keep it under reasonable control but it's taken a lot of willpower! My 'other half' has forsaken guitars in favour of photography. I mentioned that I wanted to learn to play lap style and he said: "Sell my resonator for me then you can buy yourself a suitable guitar." So now I've picked myself up off the floor (the bit that isn't littered with guitars and photographic equipment!) - anyone in the market for a lightly-played left-handed Amistar??? Sonya

Well she certainly isn't daft because when taking me to see the house she liked, the first room we went in i got told "..and i thought this could be your guitar room".
Im outfoxed on every angle ;D ;D - mind you i could keep more guitars in the garage without her setting foot in there.
Sonya - does the Amistar have a cutaway? and what model is it?

I have to go and sit on the seafront to play "old songs on those horrible twangy things" "Why can't I play nice guitar songs like James Blunt” Aaaaahggg!!!! I keep telling her that it’s not the guitars that are horrible, or the songs, it’s just the way I play them at the moment until I've had a bit more practice! It wasn't so bad in the summer, in fact it was quite uplifting, but now it’s just me in my woolly hat and the seagulls cowering in the bus shelter to keep out of the Westerly gales. Mind you, if there was ever a place outside the Mississippi for the blues it's a British seaside town in winter.

I have the good fortune of playing in a duo with my wife she sings and plays drums. She has as much interest in her gear as I do in mine. In fact when we were on our honeymoon in London Oct. 2000 she urged me to buy the 1934 Duoian that I have. cheers, Peter www.myspace.com/sawtelles

Hi fitchmeister
The Amistar doesn't have a cutaway. It's a style N, serial no 929349. Although it's left-handed, I believe it would be possible to change it to right-handed without too much modification. If you're interested, perhaps you could email me and then I can send you a photo of the guitar.

Hi Robn, I spent the first 18 years of my life in Colwyn Bay so I get my blues inspiration from memories of sitting in bus shelters on the prom in winter Why do you think all that celtic music sounds so mournful? Of couse, cold wet winters are now just a memory ;D All the best, Joe (aka Mairena Red)

Hi Snakehips, Congratulations on the wedding, you both look very smart and you certainly seem to have found the right girl Whereabouts in Spain was the other picture taken? Doesn't look like my neck of the woods, but you never can tell. All the best, Joe (aka Mairena Red) PS Seen any of the Blues 'n' Trouble boys lately?

Hi there Joe !
Thanks for that. I go to visit my brother, who lives not far away from Marbella, a 5 min car journey in from the coast (from San Pedro). He lives in a wee village called Benahavis. Its full of restaurants and bars. I go over to see him every so often and play at the bars in the village. He loves when I bring my guitar because we both end up getting free drink and food ALL night !!!!! The cute wee girl in the picture is his daughter (my neice).
Not seen the B'n'T boys since you last asked me. (other than I've done some gigs with harp/slide player Gary Martin - who used to be their roady - but a great player in his own right). Cheers.

Hi Joe, My good lady has just spent the last week on a rock climbing trip to the Costa Blanca - I'm going to pick her up this evening. First sign of cold weather battering the Welsh coast and she was off to the sun - typical. Still , Ive had a whole week of being able to play my guitars in the house to my hearts content - but it will be back to the bus shelter tomorow Robn
