Gerry Cooper asked "Talking of children's TV and musicians: anyone recall Shirley Abicair and her autoharp? Or was it a zither?" A zither. Clothespeg! Teacup! Mr Turnip! Humphrey Lestocq! Hank! Mexican Pete! Muffin the Mule!
You couldn't say "Muffin the Mule" today, though but....

I hate to be a told you so but Ry Cooder was not the 1st and only other childrens slide guitar experience, for over 70 years the opening few bars of the Looney tunes theme (Bugs Bunny etc) has the electric steel slide, and as I type this the I have just remebered Spongebob squarepants (Blue Hawaiians?) is laced with electric tikki steel. Who did play the Looney tune Riff ? session men probably with no repeat fee built in? Regards Lee

The Looney Tunes theme tune & background music was played by Hawaiian steel guitarist, Sol Hoopii. Sol was also the steel guitarist in the 1930s Betty Boop cartoons.

Michael, surely it was Freddie Tavares (of Fender fame) who did the Looney Tunes swoops. Poor old Sol was too churchy for that sort of stuff by then.
Re slide guitar on kids TV. At some point in the mid 60's I remember seeing Alexis Korner ,who ran the house band on Five o'clock club (Ollie Beak etc), try a bit of slide. Good band, he had Danny Thompson on bass!

Colin, I stand corrected. It was Freddie Tavares who played the glissando at the beginning of Looney Tunes, but it was Sol Hoopii who played the background steel guitar music in the cartoons.
Interestingly, I got the wrong facts from reading Lorene Ruymar's words! You need to know your stuff before you write books.
I don't remember seeing Alexis on children's TV. I would like to see that.
Shine On, Michael.
