Hi there !
Recently bought a used reso copy ukelele (AXL brand - nickel plated brass single cone reso, with "engraving").
Having fun with it. Not bad for £90 used.
Can anyone recommend better tuners to put on it as the ones with it slip a bit - not as bad as a cheapo wooden one for £15 I bought at the LRC last year.
The cone has a spiral on it but metal thicker than a National / NRP. Not sure if it would be worth upgrading the cone ? What upgrades are there for a ukelele cone ?
All answers thanked in advance ! Cheers !

i've been toying with the idea of getting one myself. I've seen them on 'Le Bay' for around £130. I too am interested in how the upgrades pan out.

Are they friction (non-geared) pegs? If so, they are always going to be a bit of a pain, even decent ones can be fiddly. Try tightening the friction screw on the back of the tuner until you get a good firm resistance. Also make sure the strings are firmly attached to the tuner posts, as nylon strings are really prone to slippage around the tuner post: it's best to take a double turn thru' the tuner holes, and 'lock' the string in place by winding over the loose string end as you tighten up. Also check the obvious point that the strings aren't sticking in the nut (doesn't happen that often with ukes).
If you really feel that you need new tuners, try a set of Gotoh friction pegs (I've had these off eBay in the past at a fair price), or of course you could replace them with regular guitar tuners, but this will entail drilling the headstock to fit the larger posts and bushings.

The Gotohs are a straight swap and much superior to the ones that the factory fit. Grovers are even better but need a bigger hole and are a bit of a pain to fit. The cones are pretty good anyway, but you could try swapping to one of Colin Oldham's Delta cones. I fitted one with a set of Worth CH strings & a carbon fibre biscuit and my uke now has more volume and a better tone than the original. The Delta cones do seem to be sensitive to strings though - the HiLos I tried didn't sound much good at all.
