Hi Michael this is about saying how special Ed is in terms of adding so much to the music you play - I am sure I wasn't the only one inspied by his playing and would want to learn more about what you do to add more to the music just like he does. I like playing my slide stuff but I also just like being the guitar player who makes someone else [in his case you] sound better - it is a skill I and I'm sure so many others would love to have - does he teach? or any other suggestions for how we can get to be as good as him [other than playing with you for 20 odd years] - big respect!!! David

Hi David,
Ed does not use a computer, but I will make sure he reads your very kind comments.
Ed Genis is a wonderful 'special' musician and we have been playing music together professionally since 1987, but we actually started playing together for fun in 1983. I don't think of Ed as making my playing sound better, more that we make good music together. He has developed a style of being an accompanist without vamping & strumming his way through every song which is very musical. There is both rhythm & melody in both of our parts in many of the songs. This style, as well as being natural to us, was inspired in part by duos from different genres of music; Ry Cooder & David Lindley, Jim & Bob 'the Genial Hawaiians', Peter Rowan & Jerry Douglas, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee.....etc.
The arrangements of our material are always developing and improving and we still meet to play socially for an evening; sometimes that is a rehearsal to work up a new song or improve an old one, and other times we just play because we enjoy it. I think if that enjoyment ever goes away that we would stop.
Ed does teach, both privately & in group workshop situations. His accompaniment skills are first class and come from a lifetime of playing guitar in many styles of music. I think if you and maybe some other people are interested, that we could set up a workshop where we discuss and teach how we play as a duo. That is probably the best way to get that information 'playing in a duo' from either of us.
Perhaps we could set up a 'playing in duos' workshop?
Shine On Michael.

Just add a few words here if i might. Its a pity Ed doesnt use a computer because he probably wont get to read these complimentary words about him. Ed is part of a great talented and musical family. His ex (estranged?) wife Mary is a great singer who sang with my Continental Drift band once and Ed's son (who's name escapes me) plays in one of Mr Messers current groups as a d.j. - i tend to think it was his idea to use the sample of Son House which you can hear on the video on Mr.Messer's Mike Space ( correct me if Im wrong) - I have known Ed for many many years and have only praise for his playing arranging and musicality. He was one fourth of the original National Gallery band i had with Mike Messer and Mark Makin in the late eighties. His presence, should he ever leave Mr. Messers band/groups, would surely be noticed and a replacement difficult to find. I think its time we had a solo project from Mr, Ed myself. great respect and good wishes to Mr Ed -time we had you out to Rome again buddy..get in touch.

The Genis family are very musical and Mike Cooper is correct that Ed's son, Louie, plays in the Second Mind Band. He has been working with us on and off since 1995. Most people who have the albums & come to our concerts know that Louie is Ed's son. Mary Genis (Louie's Mother) played bass and added backing vocals to the Moonbeat album in 1995.
The involvement of Louie Genis in the Second Mind Band and how the material comes together has been well documented in interviews.
I do agree that Ed is the unsung jewel.
Shine On Michael.

Mr Cooper........ Agh!!! Arfff!! Woof Woof!!! But I suppose it is the nature of a cooper to keep beating the barrel when he has hammer in hand. Maybe I'm reading this wrong?? Mmmmm!! Good businessman minds his own business.... Maybe just as well Ed don't have a computer.. The close bond between Ed and MM is obviously there, and has been for years. Where's the need for the big wooden spoon to come in and try stir things up.. Envy is not a palatable thing MC. Not the sign of maturity, no! Manurity. Muck spreading, sowing weed seeds. No offense intended Mike C.
Best wishes ... sorry if I am causing disturbance Michael M... or reading things wrong..
Take care Shine on!
Gouranga Be happy!

The way I read the original post was a genuine appreciation, and nothing more, of Eds playing, which I wholly concur with. In fact I am looking forward to seeing Ed and Michael at the gig on Friday near to me, which by all accounts will be a meeting up of quite a lot of folk reasonably local to me, that I met for the first time at SlideFest. Maybe its me, but I have noticed a couple of thread recently getting a bit "personal" rather than anything else. Lets keep it cool, chaps If I want that kind of stuff I'll go and spend an hour or so on Harmony-Central Forum

Hi folks - Ive just re-read what I wrote in the first place about Ed and it escapes me where I was putting anybody down or expressing jealousy in any way what-so-ever. It was in praise of the guy. Please explain and point it out. One thing more - my response to Mike Messer - "Not trying to put you down the hole you dig - you could have mentioned all those things i mentioned about Ed and his talented family and saved me doing it. Im not aware of what you have discussed in your interviews - i dont read them. Credit where credit is due is all Im saying - know what i mean? Im sure you do." was in reply to a part of his message to me which he seems to have deleted. It went something like 'putting me down on my own turf" if i remember rightly. Over and out.
