Hi Michael In the current music industry, who decides if a song is a blues song? Is it the artist, record company or retailer? Also, if an artist covers many styles of music can he/she influence which category their music is sold under? Bernie

Hi Bernie,
Interesting questions -
Usually the artist is type-cast as a 'Blues' or 'Jazz' or 'Rap' singer by their reputation. So this affects how the record company markets the song and how the retailer racks it up in the stores. The artist can influence the retailer about where it is racked in the store, this can be done by packaging style and by printing on the back 'FILE UNDER BLUES'. The problem is that once type-cast, it is hard to make changes. For example; no matter what type of record BB King was to make, it would always be filed under blues. I am in a similar position (but obviously not so well known). Whatever I do it gets percieved as being a blues project and marketed in that area of the industry. There are many aspects and answers tio your questions - really it would be easier to discuss, but we can't do that yet on this forum.
Keep in touch, It's good to see you visiting the forum again.
Shine On, Michael
