Just found this ebay ad for an old National which according to the description was repaired after being used to hit its owner over the head!!! cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-1931-NATIONAL-STYLE-O--RESONATOR-GUITAR_W0QQitemZ270353441998QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20090321?IMSfp=TL090321174004r21365I know Mike Harding used to refer to his metal bodied resonator as a Barnsley Fighting Guitar, but do you think theres any truth behind this one? The repair seems to be to a substantial split in the body, which to me would have had to have hit a pretty solid object with some force. If that object had been someones head, I doubt whether they would have survived!!! Still I bet theres a few other stories about other old Nationals that have led "interesting" lives.

A couple of years ago, I was in the London Resonator Centre in Denmark Street (sadly now closed) trying out a National Polychrome Tricone, when a guy came in carrying a vintage National - in 2 parts. His 8 year old son had sat on it, and the broken the neck just below the headstock.
He was remarkably cheerful, I think I would have been murderous. The owner of the shop said, don't worry, we'll put it back together, and it''ll be just like new.
I don't know if it was. I was just happy to escape with the Polychrome, as none other than Christopher Cross had gone away to think about buying it ....

I also heard another great resonator story on the TDPRI.
There was a thread called "ones that got away" or something similar. It was about guitars you wish you still had, but got rid of when you either didnt know any better, or needed the cash.
Well this guy posted about when he was a US Serviceman posted to Germany in the early 1960s. He was a handy guitar player, and didn't want to take his pride and joy Gibson acoustic, so he looked around for something tough and durable that would fit the bill for a two year posting abroad. He came across an old National that he got for a few $s and took it overseas with him, where he played it while posted. When his posting came to an end, he said he couldn't be bothered carrying the heavy thing back, so he simply left it on his newly vacated bunk in the barracks for the next guy
And yes, he said he now regretted that!
Wonder where that one is now.
