Hi all,
As (following the serial shoulder-wrenching farce) I get underway with trying to learn slide guitar lap style, and as I look around on t'interweb to see what videos etc there are of people playing lap style, I am becoming increasingly aware of how much the fascinating and diverse world of lap style guitar exceeds my knowledge / appreciation of it, so I was wondering:
Can anyone recommend any truly wide-ranging lap style cd collections or, alternatively, good collections within particular spheres/genres of lap guitar?
Many thanks,
Dave
p.s. While I'm certainly not uninterested in listening to electric lap style music, I'm especially keen to explore the range of acoustic work out there (both reso and non-reso).

I'm heading in for the night but here's a start... all acoustic. BLUES: Tom Doughty "Have a taste of this" (recent) HAWAIIAN: Sam Ku West (Grass Skirt Records) great old stuff Bob Brozman and Ledward Kaapana "In the Saddle" new stuff EVERYTHING: "Slide Planet - volume 1" this one is free DOBRO: Anything by "AKSlider" look on YouTube. Here is a Christmas song: All of these are well thought out and you can't go wrong. A very short but expressive explosion of possibility. Google will let you know where to find them. There are many others too... as I said this was a short list just to get the ball rolling. Eric P.S. Do not let the word "Hawaiian" scare you away! Forget it's 'Hawaiian' and just listen to the music. It's great stuff.

Thanks Eric, Reading your post made me realise that I omitted to mention the couple of lap style collections I've found / acquired so far, and which others might like to know of (the first of which you mentioned) - 1) Slide Planet Vol. 1: interesting, diverse and simply gifted to the world, bless 'em www.slideplanet.net/ Finding and listening to this was one of the things that made me realise just how small a range of stuff I'd heard 2) Legends of The Incredible Lap Steel Guitar : also interesting and diverse (not free, but reasonably priced - as a download, as a download at least). Features tracks by Bob Brozman, Cindy Cashdollar, Herb Remington, Orville Johnson, to name but a few. Collection reviewed at www.folkandroots.co.uk/reviews1.html#legends. Another real 'ear-opener' for me, contains a bunch of music that I didn't know I liked. (Can't get enough of the Harry Manx track myself at the moment - hadn't heard of him before, will certainly be looking out for more...) Cheers, Dave
