i wanted to ask this as a friend of mine has an MM guitar and he wants to replace the cone with a national single cone but he wanted some advice on how to do this so i thought that this would be the best place to go for advice on resonators. cheers.

Hi there !
This has been asked loads of times on this forum - so if you use the search function you should find a wealth of information on how to do it.
In short though, it is not a problem. I did it to mine with a National Resophonic hot-rod cone (ie. their new version that has been available for about a year or more). It was a tight fit to sit into my MM Lightnin' well - so I had to bend in slightly the very outer edge of the cone, all the way round - that was all. You will probably need to cut a new biscuit bridge (as otherwise the strings may end up too high or too low) - a NRP biscuit/bridge should come with the cone anyway - and is way better quality than the one that came with my guitar.
Perhaps you meant you want to try a vintage National cone ? (the original National company doesn't exist any more !!). Now, thats an idea !!! I have a vintage National cone that kept sagging as it had previously been squashed a little. I managed to get it back into a shape that would hold under string pressure BUT it was too high for the guitar it originally came in - I should try and see if it will fit height-wise in my Lightnin' !! Oooh, all excited now !!! Got to go !!!
