I have just seen a CD by Black Ace called ' Im the Boss Card in Your Hand 1937 - 60'. The photo on the front is of a guy playing slide lap style. I have never heard of him, can anybody enlighten me please? Frank

'The Black Ace' was the nickname and stage name of BK Turner (1907-1972). He came from Hughes Springs in Texas, near the border with Louisiana. Although he began playing in the 1920s, he did not pursue music seriously as a profession until the 1930s, when he fell in with Oscar 'Buddy' Woods in Shreveport, Louisiana. He recorded two sides for ARC in 1936 and six for Decca in 1937, none of the issued records enjoying any real commercial success: his signature song Black Ace was perhaps the most successful. Turner left music in the early 1940s; when rediscovered by Paul Oliver in 1961, he was reluctant to play and sing, though I think Oliver did record him in his home. Turner played lap-style (as did Oscar Woods) but unlike most lap-style players used a glass bottle rather then a steel bar. In addition to the CD you mention, his recordings are available on the JSP box set (5 CDs for about £15) of Texas Blues. The set also contains Oscar Woods' recordings and many other goodies. Though not the greatest slide player ever, he's still darn good, and I find his records engaging and well worth a listen; he's an OK singer too.
Cheerily,
Gerry C

Good to see the Black Ace being discussed here!
Three great Texan slide players - Oscar Woods, Black Ace & Ramblin' Thomas.

The Black Ace cd arrived today!!!!! I am amazed that in 40 odd years of collecting and listening to the blues, I managed to miss someone of that quality. Great stuff, I am now off to play it again! Frank
