Had a spare half hour this afternoon so I've bin and gorn and changed all the songs on my MySpace page. Two of them are bonus, previously unissued, very rare and obscure tracks! And they deserve to be!! Plus a couple of slide numbers. Listen and enjoy! Ta. Cheerily, Gerry C www.myspace.com/gerrycooper

Gerry, your spare 1/2 hr was time well spent. Love your playing, your song choice and your singing. On your previous posting you had a song called "Slow Drag." Did you ever hear it called by another name? I learned it years ago as Cincinnati Flow Rag.

Also, I want to pick your brain. In another thread you wrote about fingerpicks, plectra, and thumbpicks, or the lack thereof. I was talking to a friend in Nashville who works steady playing a Tele and he swears by fake fingernails women (mostly) use for cosmetic purposes. I read years back that these can't be worn for extended periodsof time because the natural nail underneath degrades. Have you ever tried these? If so what were the results?

Thank you for your kind words, smoochimoto. The piece I call Slow Drag I basically learned from my old pal and teacher Roger Sutcliffe, who plays it under that name; I also added licks from the version by John James, also called SD. It was only later when I obtained the recording by Rev. Gary Davis that I 'discovered' the other title. Nowadays when I play it live I joke that I call it Slow Drag because I can't spell Cincinnati!
Regarding nails: yes, I've heard that prolonged wearing of false nails can affect the proper nail, but I've never had a problem with the acrylics I use, not least because I always have them professionally done in a salon, usually with a group of ladies who lunch. ;D This means that the hygiene is properly done and the nails are fed properly. When I have them done, I usually remove them a day or two beforehand (unless I'm gigging) and practise with my picks. This ensures that they get a rest and some fresh air. The only side effect is that my natch'l nails are a little soft for the first day or two when the acrylics are removed. I first started using them about eight years ago after a post-gig chat with Martin Simpson, who has used them for ages.

Thanks, Michael! The Travelling Blues track came from my show on Chorley FM back in September last year, which was, if I recall correctly, the first appearance by a MM Lightning on the famous talking-type steam radio!

Thanks very much, y'all! And Dj - the wishes are reciprocated! (In case anyone's wondering, Dj and I have just discovered that we share the same birthday [14/1]. He's only the third person I've ever come across who does.)
Cheerily,
Gerry C
