Following on from the 'What Are You Listening to?' thread, I wondered what was the last music folks heard in 2008 and the first in 2009...
Well, Best Beloved and I had a quiet night in and after a nice meal and bottle of wine (Cotes du Rhone 2006, growler) sat down to see the New Year in with Jools Holland. Like all his NYE programmes, it was a mixture of good and bad: Martha Reeves and the Vandellas were fabulous, Adele and the Ting Tings were pretty ropy, Duffy was execrable and then came Annie Lennox, singing her solo hit Why? with Jools' orchestra. When she finished I felt as if I'd had my emotions put through a combine harvester! She was WONDERFUL, simply blowing away all the other simpering little girls pretending to be singers. We simply turned the TV off, knowing that whatever came after could not possibly compare.
This morning - washing up, so put on King Guitar for the first time in, ooh, days; then a Lightnin' Hopkins compilation bought from Shipley market for £2....
Happy 2009, everyone!

Hi Gerry, I spent New Year's Eve much the same as you did (I think we may have even drunk a 2006 bottle of wine too). I sometimes wonder which is better....Andy Stewart's Hogmanay Show or Jools Holland's Hootenanny? But I am just a Grumpy Old Slide Guitarist .....only teasing.....as you said Gerry, the show is always an interesting mixture of different styles. Without Jools Holland & Mark Cooper we would have no decent live music shows on British TV. In fact Mark Cooper is also responsible for most of the good BBC music documentaries. .....I haven't listened to any music yet today. I'll let you know.... Shine On Michael

Gerry and Michael.......Happy New Year!!! Stevie Ray Vaughan was the first music for the year. I had a glass or 2 of red wine and a few bourbons spent quietly with my girl and two close friends....

Passed the evening very pleasantly with the family and the remnants of my "Grandmas Weapons Grade Ginger Beer - A beer of Mass Destruction" a local delight and the last of my barrel of Skinners Jingle Knocker. Wonderful beer, as for music I thought that Jools was not that good last night, Rico was disappointing and as for the majority of the female artistes they rose to the standard of very poor, agree about martha Reeves, as for this morning I woke to house to the dulcet tones of the Skids, closely followed some Stiff Little Fingers. The wife and children keep trying to hide them but they will fail.
Seasons greetings to all
Pete

Hi, Ditto re Jools, ditto re the evening - ours was a bottle of Clos Bourbon 2005, followed by some calvados(s) - I was doing the cooking, so lot's of alcohol is always a good idea! The last was, probably, Annie L (awesome) or was that after midnight? The first was Joe Bonamassa, live in Shepherds Bush, bridge to better day's - oh I do hope so!
Have visitors so no engraving my MM Blues allowed, apparently the buzzing noise drives people nuts, not done any for 3 days now, really starting to miss it, hope its not habit forming!
all the best everybody

Happy New Year y'all! We washed down some Jose Gonzalez (last) and James Talley sings Woody Guthrie (first) with a bottle of Buzet from 2000.
The wine was awesome and so is the bottle. It's the heaviest bottle I've had the pleasure to empty and the neck will make a fine slide. The glass is really thick and fits snugly around my ring finger. So, the question is whether to risk doing it DIY and buggering it up or spend the money getting it cut properly?
I've googled it and know what to do - at least, in theory!

Hi Dom, Happy New Year. If you have a valuable glass bottle I would recommend getting it cut & polished by Diamond Slides. Then you know it will be done properly with no risk of breaking it.
Shine On Michael.

I saw Jools and was very disappointed that the house band backed everybody. It was like ketchup on food: ok with some but no good on most.
We shared a good Cava rose which made the time better but the same saurce ,often on old food(songs) didn't do much for my state of happiness.
Still next day I sorted out my 'Airport Expansion Blues' a provisional title and played on the tri-cone in Dm, so I felt better for that! Going on CD and You Tube sometime this month I hope.

Sorry I have drunk many French champagne glasses ( a bottle? But a good one!) But these bottles are not good for making bottlenecks... Anihow as I always say after that: Hau'li Makahiki Hou. Bonne année à tous.

Saw the new year in at a "Bad Taste" party with some friends that I went to with my wife and kids. We were all extremely badly dressed, the tipple of the evening was Old Speckled Hen with a glass of cava to usher in the new year. Had to agree that Annie Lennox stole the show on Jools Holland (even though her dress wouldnt have been out of place at our party!) but there again even her more commercial stuff has had a certain quality about it that sets her apart from others.
My first music of the new year (over a long breakfast) was an album by an Australian band called the John Taylor Trio, (mix of acoustic/electric stuff) then Rubber Factory by the Black Keys. Later to further dissipate any hangover, Ry Cooder/Manuel Galban, Booker T and the MGs, and Kings of Leons latest. Oh and a couple more Old Speckled Hens!!!
A bit of resonator playing helped welcome in 2009 too!
All the best and a happy 2009 to all

Well, I watched the Jools Holland show up to the 'interview' with Al Murray then switched to Hogmanay Live for the appropriate music for New Year, raised a glass of Old Pulteney (the appropriate beverage) to absent friends, and then watched Eddi Reader sing Burns Songs.
Health, wealth and happiness,
Bill

Happy New Year to All ! Spent a cosy evening with close family playing our traditionally-planned New Years Eve 'Murder Mystery' game, accompanied by several bottles of my favourite Chianti (.....great for bottlenecks - how strange is that? ;D...) and half-watching Jools Holland. Must agree with all the comments here about the performances, and i still reckon Eric C's 'Hootenanny' appearance back in '05 was the best . Peace & prosperity to all for 2009.....and don't listed to the doom-mongers! Slide On! Ian.

Happy New Year to you all.
The last thing I heard in 2008 was me and he first thing I heard in 2009 was me! Great night spent playing and jamming with friends and other halves, which has become a regular New Years event. As for what I was drinking, by that time it was whatever anyone stuck in front of me......
So I missed Jools, but well remember a couple of years back seeing Seasick Steve on the New Year's prog. for the first time and wondering why I bother at all!
Cheers,
M.
