My Beltona Southerner has arrived. 14fret, two pick ups. It was very well packed, and is lovely. I had it painted metallic bronze.
My camera has died so a photo will have to wait, as will YouTube vidoes using it.
It is still new and 'stiff' but there is a warmth to it which I am sure will develop over time.
No heavier than a wooden bodied acoustic and it feels very much like my Fyldes, but it sounds beautifully different.

Well, it never really sounded that good with the original l steel strings. Not yet having a case probably didn't help the guitar settle down either. Now it has a set of 15/56 MM Newtones and with a heavy glass or heavy brass slide it has woken up. Very different from the Busker, which is a good good thing. The Hiscox case is due and then I believe the guitar will properly settle down and become a superb mellow resonator with a good cut at the bridge end when needed. As an electric I am sure it will soar and roar, as it does already.

I hope that I have attached a YouTube clip of this guitar being played acoustically. I am comparing the 2 sides of a Diamond Bottleneck Evolution slide, a heavy Dunlop Brass slide, and a big heavy Diamond B'necks glass slide. The playing was raw busking, but the idea is to show the guitar and compare the sounds from the various slides. I think it may go well with a heavy steel slide too.

Last night i took it to a blues open mic/jam at The Anglesea Arms in Orpington, Kent.
Played though a Marshall 100Valve combo on clean it really sang. Getting huge vibrato with the brass slide was great fun. A harp player joined me for a few songs.
It works very well as an amplified reso, sounds very very steel and I am delighted with it. I shall have to see if it works better with my 5w valve Fender VibroChamp than my 50w transistor Marshall Acoustic amp.

Help/advise needed.
I have always been concerned about the top end acoustic sound on this otherwise superb guitar. Today I did the obvious thing and looked at the bridge. The slot for the 1st string is lower than the others.This seems to me to be why the top end is dead: the 1st string is too close to the frets and either lays on them or nearly does and so looses any tone, power and punch.
Playing at the 12th fret with a slide, any slide, the 1st string is dead and feels too low.
Do others agree my diagnosis? Am I right that Dave King is the man in London do fix this? I currently have no facilities to make a new bridge.

Hi Barry,
It sounds to me like you should have a set-up done to your own spec'. Dave King is the person to take it to. Make sure you request that he does the job for you.

True, but I think the original set up was wrong. I'll have to see what Steve of Beltona can do abut it. Pay me to return it (bad idea) or pay for Dave King to sort it (better idea).
There'll be a couple of short YouTube videos soon, one showing the bridge slots and the other giving the sound of the 1st string in the slot ans then with the first string on top of the bridge, which should make it as good as it should be.

Just take it to Dave and get it set up how you like. Let me know how you get on both with asking Beltona to pay, and getting Dave to set it up for you.

I rang Dave King at his Denmark Street w'shop and spoke to Celine. She said that she could do the job of replacing the bridge.
Not wishing be accused of misogyny, I wonder what connection Celine is to Dave King. Does her work equal the skill etc of Dave King? I would have asked if a chap who was not Dave King answered the phone and said he could do the job.

The You Tube videos of bridge slot is at 'Beltona Bridge' on my You Tube channel and a comparison of the sound of the 1st string in and out of the slot is at 'Beltona 1st String test'.
Both these videos are primarily for Steve Evans of Beltona, but I think the second proves that the 1st string works much better on the bridge and out of the slot. So the slot is too deep.
