Aloha folks! One of my biggest desires when it comes to instruments, is to own a vintage National with pearloid peghead veneer. I know of a handful of ukuleles (style 2 and 3, all small body), it's a feature on style 3 and 4 tricones, and there's of course the style N guitar. Does anyone here own a National with pearloid peghead? If so, sharing is caring.

You mean pretty like this ?:
It must be a modification because most of the Exploding palm tree are adorned with grey perloïd as we know, the fancy fretboard too, but the effect is dramatic...a modified Style one triplate, with added perloïd headstock, used to roam on reverb for a long time.
I love perloïd, banjoes, drum kits, accordions with flashing strass inserts too... most guitarist took it as "mother of the toilet seat" but it's not just plastic. In these times it was a scientific miracle; just a step from transmuting lead in gold ! A super futuristic view.

Hi there !
Do you mean Iveroid, or Pearloid/MOTS ?
I have a 1932 Style N with Iveroid headstock veneer, and used to own the Acanthus De-Lux 1927 squareneck Tricone, which also had the Iveroid headstock veneer - but neither were Pearloid.

Ah! I wasn't aware of that distinction. I guess I've always called both varieties "pearloid" and to be honest I'm not quite if I understand the difference. So National used ivoroid on their style 3s and 4s and Ns? How would you call the veneer material of this Ludwig uke-banjo (which is mine)?

Hi again ! Sorry, I can't seem to view that picture. Pearloid has reflective elements in it, aiming to mimic real Mother-of-Pearl. Iveroid tries to mimic the look of Ivory, with straight lines it it. Ooooft !!!!! I just realised, looking at my pictures & zoomed in, that my headstock overlay IS pearloid in appearance. So, ignore what I wrote above ! Silly me !!!

You should be able to see my photo now. Looks like the same material as your style N, snakehips. So nice!!
Ludwig called the plastic they used "Pyralin".

Interesting. That doesn't look like the Ludwig (nor National) peghead material at all, indeed more ivory than pearly.

That's Martin Wheatley. Haven't see him for decades. That's what he's up to. Shine On Michael

Very nice! This one was for sale recently, right? I was tempted, but then forgot about it. Very classy.

I bought it last August. It came from a seller who really didn't know about instruments, let alone Nationals, so there were a lot of unanswered questions. I put in a low offer, expecting to have to put up to $1K in repairs into it... turns out all it needed was a new tailpiece and some strings.
