i moved to Alaska to work on the oil spill after slowly heading toward broke in northeast TX since my sons were born and i was forced to start playing like i was an adult. Valdez, AK was a sleepy little town of less than 5,000 back then where many of the residents knew each other. most of them were commercial fishers or worked at the Alyeska Marine Terminal where the oil tankers were loaded.
they were spared the usual Alaska summer influx of tourists for the most part because the 120 mile/193 KM (one way) drive to there from Glennallen on the Richardson Highway kept the Winnebago Herds from migrating in that direction.
i learned an important lesson at that time from the local residents. Captain Joseph Hazelwood was pretty much hammered when he left the Totem Inn to sail his oil tanker to Long Beach, CA refineries. he was not due to take over command until the next morning when his First Mate had gotten the ship beyond the Prince William Sound into open seas. if all sailors who returned from shore leave drunk were discharged--would there be any navy, anywhere?
we all are destined to eventually start running our own lives when Mommy and Daddy have to stop supporting their grown babies for the child's benifit. be aware that once we take the helm, the good or bad experiences that follow will be done under our command, and we will need to own them. whether we caused them or not:
