Phew, that’s a strange job someone’s done. It needs a neck reset and a new fretboard.
Lee, look closely. The fretboard is filling most of that void.

I only quickly looked and this one is too early for the paper mache fingerboards, I am not on the prowl for any more Nationals but over the years I have always enjoyed the feel of a 14 fret more it just feels right to me and my style I guess.

Agree it’s a complete mess, and the listing is ringing all the alarms for leave it alone, but….. if it had a proper restoration firstly what would it cost and what would its value be? Not that I would consider it but I’d like to hear. Mrs T

The description describes it as a square neck and then a v neck 🙃🤔. Body looks ok to me, everything else is on trust. Might play fine with a good setup but shouldn't count on it! Price seems right for a well setup guitar but not so good if you have to spend £300+ on it. Plus it's in the States with all the import costs and problems that would entail. All my opinion of course, more knowledgeable members will kick in I dare say 👍🙂
Best wishes to you all, John

It's really hard to see exactly what has been done and what needs doing, but I think they have raised the original phenolic (papier-mâché) fretboard. Whether or not that fretboard is saveable is not known, but as far as I can see it looks like an okay condition Duolian that would be well worth getting back into a playable state. As Bonzo has said, a repair of this type would be in the region of £300+ and done by the right person it would be a beautiful guitar. Restored by one of the handful of great resophonic luthiers it would be worth somewhere around 3.5 to 4k GBP. As it is, it is worth 50%+ a bit of what they're asking.

It seems like they pushed back the whole neck and stick, closer to the back. I am afraid to think about the enlarged hole someone might find under the heel when the neck wil be set at his natural place, with a normal fretboard...
That can't be hidden no more, but maybe a skilled reso-luthier can make a patch ?... And perhaps some partial make up, or a new evening gown made by Mr Rick Besser can give her more charm, and value. (If nothing else was ruined during the heavy surgical process).
Somewhere under the bunk, i have an old 80's US guitar magazine with an interview of Scott Ainslie telling that Nationals need a stiffer fertboard for improvement. It looks like a decent method of avoiding some subtles issues, way back in time.
Son House had a very strange guitar with this kind of big log added, you can see this one in the Lawrence Cohn book "Nothing but the blues" (P 129). ...Johnny Winter too had a special one with a harmony tail piece added, if I remember.

Oh no....I forgot; pushing the neck back means the heel been wrongly cut to sit flat on the side ( there's no more rounded join under the twelve fert area )...that can't be masked in any way. And if I look to the pictures, there's some mess between neck heel and body. The scale might be wrong too, so even for a very skilled luthier and a serious Duolian lover, this one cannot come back to his former glory...perhaps a "player" at least but with some weird scars... Sad.
