A documentary of Piedmont master John Jackson. He plays a slide piece, John Henry, and describes what he's used as a slide - here it's a made from a knife handle - at about 9:05.

John was one of the sweetest, finest and most humble people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He was also a great guitarist and singer. John's slide was made for him. It was a brass knife-type of device that fitted perfectly into his hand between his fingers. I think this photo was taken in 2001 at the Exeter 'Blues Week' where we were both teaching. John died in January 2002. We spoke on the phone a few days before he died, I am glad I made that call. Shine On Michael

Brilliant film & what a strong accent they had. John also had the best thumb in the business. The woman signing John's lyrics was fantastic, good job they weren't smutty like Bo Carter.

Lovely to see John again. Strange to think it was over 20 years ago when I heard him live.
Pete
This just reminds that at Pocklington last week I meant to get my ‘knife’ out and get Michael to show me how John played slide..... maybe next time

Pete This just reminds that at Pocklington last week I meant to get my ‘knife’ out and get Michael to show me how John played slide..... maybe next time John and I spent far too much time discussing slide techniques and he liked the way I could use his brass knife-slide in both standard and lap steel positions. I am sure there are some videos on Youtube of John with that slide, I must have a search around. I think I have some photos of me using John's slide, but where..... hmmmm. I would be happy to show you how I play in that style. Next time we bump into each other! Shine On Michael
