thank you, Michael.
it is good to hear that even though the UK doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving Day officially, some there do share the initial intent of the day anyway.
it was in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation declaring a day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens" as our nation was plunging down into the dark depths of the civil war.
Later in 1939 Thanksgiving, by an act of Congress received a permanent observation date, the fourth Thursday in November. Fred Lazarus, Jr., founder of the Federated Department Stores (later Macy's), is credited with convincing Roosevelt to push Thanksgiving to a week earlier to expand the shopping season, and within two years the change passed through Congress into law. It is now a federal holiday due to the Congressional legislation passed in 1941.
recalling how my mother loved the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade so much when i was just a little rug rat, i turned on the TV programming of the event with the volume turned off so as not to wake my wife who was still sleeping down the hallway.
per federal law requirements from 1997, there was a warning displayed in the upper left hand corner of the screen of recommended parental viewer guidance. rated "PG-D". looked it up and learned:
The Content Labels TV Parental Guidelines may have one or more letters added to the basic rating to let parents know when a show may contain violence, sex, adult language, or suggestive dialogue.
D – suggestive dialogue (usually means talks about sex)
at that point, i could swear i heard my mother turning over in her grave, and turned the TV off...
hope you get well soon and enjoy your holiday season later on this year.
