Hi
Could you suggest a good compilation, perhaps a box set to get more familiar with Jelly Roll Morton's music?

There are so many compilations of his work that you should probably get a few.
The RCA Centennial complete Victor Recordings is a great one. Also the JSP Complete Recorded Work 1926-1929.
This 1926 recording with the Red Hot Peppers is beautiful
This of course is the Jelly Roll Blues, also from 1926.
These one microphone recordings are extraordinary, just beautifully done.
I hope that is helpful

Thanks Michael, availability is not a problem, a problem is that there are too many! I'll start with Victor Recordings.
I guess recording a band like this with one microphone would be a frightening idea for any recording engineer today.

I love that kind of music! I usually end up findin' it in some compilation. If you want to check out some finger style Jelly Roll guitar arrangements there is a book by my friend Lasse Johansson. Beautiful arrangements (not very easy, though)! Here's King Porter Stomp, played by him: Frank
