Hiya
I'm sure this has been asked before, but I’m having a hesitation moment!
Normally I tune Open D & OpenG in 15s Standard MM Resonator strings.
Been trying out on my MM Lightening with 15s tuned down from Open D to Open C and kinda liked the songs in C tuning. It might be my hearings changed as I get older.
Two questions:
1. if I restring to 16s Heavy in Open C, is it likely to make much difference to the sound? I kinda like that heavy/lower sound.
2. whilst it’s got 16s on will the guitar be ok going from Open C to Open D?
regards Steve Isle of Man
P.S. I don’t put a 13 string on at all and I don’t like going to higher E or A, might be my hearing & tinnitus don’t like this.

Hi Steve
When I started MM Strings with Newtone 30 years ago I used 16-59s on all my guitars in open G (DGDGBD) and D (DADF#AD). Back then I only played vintage National guitars which do not have truss rods, I also played a lot harder than I do now, and I never damaged one guitar. Also in those days the 16-59s were a very popular product, almost as popular as the 15-56s
I currently have two of my guitars tuned down to open C (CGCEGC) with 16-59s, MM Fiddle Edge and original 1930s Fiddle Edge M32, and they are sounding really good.
I started using 16-59s back in the old days because when I got to know Bob Brozman, that is what he was using on his vintage National guitars. Another great player back then that used 16-59s on his vintage National Trojan, was Steve James.
I stopped using them sometime in the mid 1990s because I was looking for a more open sound and I have played with 15-56 on all my guitars since then.
Your MM Lightning will be fine with MM Newtone 16-59s in low C and standard open G and D tunings.
The reason I said "MM Newtone" was not to advertise, but because they tune to pitch at lower tension than most other brands of strings.
Are you still living at the same address at Number 5? I'll post a set to you on Monday.
I hope that is helpful.

I find a 16 too much for the hands and chokes the cone, less is more, 15 top on lap steel and 13 on Spanish neck works for me. I do like Michaels MM Newtones though just have to fiddle with the high end for my preference.

MM, many, many moons past i decided to wait for your strings to become available here in the US of A. this thread reminded me to do a search again today. was only able to find "The Twelfth Fret" in Ontario, Canada and they will/may add their export taxes as well. have to pick diameter to get pricing. may not be much pain difference between getting hit upside the head with Justin's or Charles III's baseball VAT? dunno, could be just as well to pay the UK VAT that 12th fret had to charge for also? if they ship overseas, how can i price them from www.michaelmesser.co.uk/mm-strings-by-newtone page for export across the pond? with the attention span of an embryo, i have forgotten diameter recommendations and alloy you gave long ago for diving duck guits here. i need to get his [envisioned] long term multi-set order right the first time. please tell me your diameter for open D tuning on an 1133 again. thank you very much please, mitchfit

Hi Mitch
On my 1133 I use 15-56 phosphor bronze MMs for open D and G tunings and it sounds and feels great. If you have a magnetic pickup on your 1133 you might want to try the same specs in the monel MMs.
You should contact Neil Silverman at Newtone and ask him about the cost of shipping you a set or two direct. It works out better for Neil and probably won't cost more than ordering them from 12th Fret.
Here's Neil's email - info@newtonestrings.com - say that I have put you in touch
Let me know how it goes and if I can be of any help, just holler!

I use 16-59 on my tricone (also because of a certain Bob), and with those strings I find that I can dig in very hard! I keep it in open tunings only. On my wooden tricone I put on a set of 13 with a 15 on top and it is in standard tuning mostly; it's a bit easier on the fingers and somewhat a bit more open sounding. With that guitar I like nickel strings. Frank

to USA residents who want to order MM reso-strings from... newtonestrings.com/?v=7516fd43adaa...in the UK. it can be done using plastic, but even though not stated in E-order form you must include a zero in front of card expiration date month if same is a single digit number. OOoops, my bad. then you [like i did] may spend a half hour contacting and verifying the card issuing company's fraud division 800 number in order to get the sale to go through to another nation over the Atlantic. or not, YMMV. just a heads up that it can be done. thanks again to MM, mitchfit
