Alison Kraus is a superb artist - a fine fiddle player with a beautiful voice. This early material is so good and features some of Nashville's finest acoustic musicians - Russ Barenberg, Roy Huskey Jr, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas and Tony Trishka, to name a few. As well as Alison's own music, I love what she does with Robert Plant.

since 2008? could be a i'm a little behind the learning curve here? have to admit stopped watching "country" music awards about that same timeframe. when the local stations were airing songs like "i play chicken with the train", "should've said no", "all i want to do" and "good time".
to be honest, it really seemed that the genre had completely forgotten where it came from. the pendulum seems to be swinging back the other way presently, hope so.
liked this tune by Krauss and Plant due to the retro sound it had:
but have to admit her beginning sound palette with Union Station was more to my liking:

There’s a good and easy to find tale about when Alison’s singing voice was revealed.
I saw the first Raising Sand tour in Mancs Apollo with both Buddy Miller and T Bone Burnett in the band. Great old instruments in the guitar racks. T Bone had a stack of half a dozen or so vintage small combos behind him.
Excellent gig and from memory Robert Plant was the only one with a wedge monitor
Cheers

Country has been through a lot of changes since the Carter Family including in the 2000s a lean towards 'big hair' music as some have called it. Around this time, distorted guitars, meaty drums and loads of reverb featured with a sometimes cursory nod in the directions of pedal steel/banjo/fiddle. 'Keeping up with the times' drew a huge crossover audience - stadium country is a long way from the back porch.
Some artists such as Gillian Welch/David Rawlings and many others are enormously successful writing and playing new songs which sound traditional.
My own preference is old and old sounding acoustic stuff but some of the new and newish country players are so musically talented.
Cheers

looked for a video clip with no luck. remember an episode of the simpsons where homer's bud lenny was whining about the constant repetition of songs on the oldies station.
venting his angst, he continued with something like...
...when are they gonna come out with some new oldies?
my sediments exactly, mitchfit

^^^^ "Robert Plant using stage monitor". not presented as fact, just speculation. remember seeing three Ginger Baker interviews where he complained about a line of six Marshall guit/bass amps directly behind him through 3 sets at every concert. eventually he demanded a wall of plastic around him and kit at live venues. last interview i saw of him he was sporting stereo hearing aids. Page triplets when live: www.woodytone.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Page_Jimmy_old_bw_amps.jpga 360 (watt) bass head like JPJ played, sometimes two of them. www.guitar-auctions.co.uk/public/images/Sales/149/544.JPGheard a joke about two ex-band members meeting again at an awards ceremony: Jimi shouts-- hey man, how ya been doing? Skunk replies-- ya don't have to shout anymore, i have a new hearing aid that works real good. Jimi asks-- oh, i see, what kind is it? Skunk looks at his wrist and says-- nine thirty seven mitchfit

I have worn musicians ear defenders around any loud music since the early 90s. In fact since being a bit too close to John Campbell at the Mean Fiddler in London in 93. It actually hurt my ears and I had to get as far away from John's amp as was possible. Then after a gig with my late friend, Jesse Taylor from Texas, I was unable to hear properly for a couple of days. So I went to a hearing specialist for an examination and some tests. I had temporary damage from too much noise and was told to rest my ears for a couple of months, which I did and my hearing returned to normal. I was then advised to get some musicians ear defenders made and I have worn them around loud music ever since. Not so much when I am on stage, unless it is with a loud band, but always at other peoples' gigs when I am in the audience. They are amazing, I can actually hear the music clearer with them in. I have three different filters that I can put into them depending on how much volume or which frequencies I want to cut. They're not cheap, but they are superb. www.acscustom.com/uk/products/hearing-protection/pro-seriesI wear them because I don't want Mitch's Skunk & Jimi joke to come true! Shine On Michael

public service announcement--- as MM pointed out above, it was just a joke. included Hendrix and Baxter because they don't/didn't wear hearing aids. that, and because many don't know they were in a band together at one time. it could easily taken as making fun of musicians who do. not my intention. pick the names you recognize below, this stuff is real.. hearnet.com/features/articles/artist_article_celebs.shtmlmitchfit.
