I love Merle Haggard's music. He was such a great singer and from accounts, a lot of fun to be around. My brother, Alan Messer, knew Merle and worked with him a few times. Here's a track and the album cover of "A Taste Of Yesterday's Wine" that Alan shot for Merle and George Jones back in 1982. "I Think I've Found A Way To Live Without You" I used to do this song and somewhere I have a recording of me doing it. It nearly made the cut onto my first album.
My personal favourite Merle Haggard album is his tribute to Jimmie Rodgers "Same Train Different Time" recorded in 1968. Back in the old days I learned quite a lot of my Dobro playing style from this album.

since posting yesterday, have been emailed by friends and learned:
he was in the audience when johnny cash recorded his live in san quentin album, in 1958.
he opened for lefty frizzell at age 16, in 1953.
his entire life story should be made into a [hard to believe] movie.
so many twists and turns it would have to be a very long movie to do it justice.

Mitch, I knew that about Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard. In fact John met him when he did that San Quentin show and helped him after his release. I didn't know the Lefty Frizzell connection.

I was fortunate to have seen Merle a number of times over the years. I enjoyed every single show. I leaned against the outdoor stage in Copper Mountain, Colorado through a driving rainstorm. I saw him a few days after 911 in Denver. One time I got to a show really early and was able to wait inside at a table and Bonnie Owens came and sat down for around 30 minutes before the rest of the band showed up. We mostly talked about an early duet album that she and Merle did together. I asked if they would do “Just Between the Two of Us”…and they did. That was a great moment.
