Hi all, I have a 20” scale custom 5 string solid Koa mini Weissenborn style instrument made by Liam Kirby (Wunderkammer). It’s currently fitted with a Newtone custom set: .15 .18 .27w .39w .47w tuned to open G. It has a reinforced bridge plate to take the tension. I was on the waiting list for around 2 years for it. When l got it l was initially very pleased with it but thought l had probably outgrown it. It’s on ebay but the last few weeks l’ve been experimenting with different tone bars etc and settled on a Beard stainless steel stevens bar. I’d swear the sound is opening up, I’ve not really played it much. Since l bought a Bose S1 it seems to compliment the K&K pure mini pickup. I’m just using a bit of reverb and a mini volume pedal. The machine heads look like golden age ones. The 5th string (G) is really difficult to bring up to pitch. I’ve tried a lighter gauge (all of the strings) but it loses it’s bite. I’m wondering if a set of Newtone Alohas might be the answer or a reentrant G? Any thoughts you may have would be appreciated.

Apologies for not responding sooner but I have only just spotted your thread.
Aloha strings will be fine. Malcolm Newton and I designed them to tune to pitch at very low tension, so that repro Weissenborn guitars could be tuned to GBDGBD and even AC#EAC#E without the guitar snapping in two. That was back when LRC were selling Weissenborn/ acoustic Hawaiian guitars and everyone trying them were dobro players.
Debashish Bhattacharya has a uke size Weissenborn that he plays and it sounds beautiful. In fact when Manish Pingle and I started playing together ten years ago, he also had one. I had forgotten about that.
Shine On Michael
