Just got this case with a Yazoo reso I posted about in another thread. Not to be outdone by Mr Snakehips I'm going to 'restore' it. No needles and threads, just my 60+ years of experience bodging in the building trade! Any idea how old it might be? What it was made for as it's not the usual guitar shaped case I'm used to seeing. Any help and advice welcome although I will have snakey's manual to refer to.

Hi Bonzo,
The cardboard sides of that case (at least the edges of it) look like they are deteriorating/crumbling. What are you thinking ? Strip & recover, cover over what's there, just patch what you've got ??

Hi Snakey. Hopefully I'm going to use what I have to hand, stabilising solutions, bonding agents and reinforced areas of stress. I refurbished the case of the Radiotone ukulele I bought recently and although it was in nowhere near as bad condition to start with it has worked out well and should have another few years of life left. Any idea how old this case is? Was it originally made for guitar?π€πΈπ

No idea about the case. I was thinking 1920βs to 1930βs - but never really cared for vintage guitar cases up until recently.

Hi again !
I was thinking that the inside lining will be difficult to make it not still look like a cat has lived and pee'd in it for years ! You might want to think about relining the case inside with fresh material. I tried contact adhesive spray first of all, but it soaked through the faux suede material I was using, leaving damp-looking patches. I ended up using wood glue (Gorilla glue), spread out thinly over the original lining, then lightly pressed on the new material, being careful not to press too hard ( or glue would seep through and "stain" the fabric).

Hi Snakey. All good advice, thanks for the input. Love your description of the inside. I'll probably start by completely dismantling it which shouldn't take long. My aim is to end up with a sturdy quite stylish vintage case. If I jazz it up a bit along the way so much the better.... I think I have some faux leopard skin fabric left over from a previous project πππΈ

It's from a Birmingham made Banjo of the 1920's, "Windsor" brand etc. I have an identical one on a Banjo Mandolin. The factory was bombed in WW2 and that was the end of them. Does the Guitar actually fit ? I love fixing things but I'm not sure I'd spend a lot of time on one of those as it won't offer much protection to your Guitar, it's what you might call "entry level".

Hi all
Late to the thread. I agree with Davey, looks like an old Windsor banjo case. I once bought an old Stella faux-resonator guitar which turned up in one of those cases, which had a Windsor label in it.
Cheers
Andy
